87 RX7 - I got it for $500, and it runs ! Little help?

I'm new, I love the car, unfortunately its about 40 miles away at my dads.
It's our new project car for autocrossing.
I had to post !
Its awesome!
I'm very happy!

Anyways,
I got the car for $500, reattached a wire to fix a buzzing add coolant light (someone took the wire that was suppose to go to the sensor and grounded it).
My father and I were at one of his friends house, who owns an RX7 and my dad is hauling away his parts car when he is done with it.
Free semi-damaged body. The best part about that, I get a free manual transmission, pedals, cylinder, dash panel, everything I need but the rear end. I'll have to look in some junkyards around here.
The guy also gave us an AEM high flow air filter to replace the stock, and hes giving me a Magnaflow high flow dual exhaust kit. (not "true" dual exhaust, just the one that looks cool lol)

I did some reading before I bought it, I think it was on this forum but I can't find the thread anymore (this was only sunday) about the quickest way to up horse power.
The thread said replacing all the belts and whatnot. Any chance I could get more in detail on what I should replace to make the engine run better?

Is it regular for the gas gauge to stop working?
How hard is it with someone for little to no mechanical experience to replace?
they're probably expensive though. Any idea where to get one?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

congrats on the purchase besure to read the 2nd gen sticky on the Fc's,
get the car running right, then begin the tune -up. prelace your fuel filter , whats your mileage. change things accordingly.

as for the fuel gauge it. does the needle sit below the line after the 1/4 marker? if the needle sits below it then its bad i had a 1991 S5 guage with a bad oil pressure gauge the needle sat below the 0 limit and didn't respond at all. it also burnt out a piece in the ecu... so its maybe the sender unit.. in the fuel tank.

lets see some pics
whats the transmission type ? mileage ? write down the VIN and check it on the
2nd gen sticky FAQ

I'll have some pics on Tuesday or so.
Its an auto at the moment but like I said I'm getting the manual transmission for free !
its got 193k miles on it, and its been sitting for about 5 years.
Yea, the gauge sits below zero.
The guy who owned it said that when you fill it up, the gauge goes to full but drops to E much faster than it should, below 90 miles at least. I haven't seen it do that yet, haven't put a full tank in it. Sounds like
I can't wait until I can get a chilton/haynes for it.
Which one would you recommend?

Thanks,
Nick

Yes, do all of the 60k mile tune up items on the maintenance schedule.

For the tranny swap, you dont NEED the rear end. You can use the 5 spd driveshaft and it will bolt up.

Then for power, you'll want the catback exhaust, which you already have, and a header. Then either a high flow cat, straight pipe, presilencer, or whatever else that you can think of that flows well to connect the 2.

Then a true cold air intake, and make sure the aux ports are working.

Good luck.

Wow, you got a good deal on your FC. I paid $1400 for mine with 91k on it and roughly the same amount of extra parts. I got some extra bodywork to fix my car's body. Too bad the extra panels are black and my car is white though.

I live up in GP right now, I commute to Ashland though, so Medford is no problem. The car's in Shady Cove with my dad, but I'll drive it after I insure it. I'll take it back here and clean the interior and do most of the general maintenance stuff.

Where do you like shopping for auto parts for these things?

I'm going to stick a computer in mine.
I've been looking at the VIA MII platforms and the small form factors. All I can think is - their charging too much.
I'm thinking I can scrape up from used parts basically a junker computer and buy one of their "CarPC Power Supplies" to power it, wont need more than they output and coolings generally not a problem when its not outputting much heat.
I can run the cables for a 7" touchscreen that runs generally around $200 to the front for controls, add a wireless keyboard, maybe a remote and I'm good to go. The next thing would be adding steering wheel controls. I think I'd just modify a remote for that.
Only problem would be getting good software to run it all .. Theres gotta be something out there though.

Its cool to find someone else that lives in the heart of Southern Oregon, as I do myself. My dad's friend (forget his name) is into these things too. Maybe I'll try and get him to join the forums.

91k is LOW mileage on an FC. You got a good deal on yours, as well. Mine has over double that mileage. With good rebuilds, how long do these engines last?

What exactly are aux ports? The term doesn't ring car bells in my head.
As I've said, I'm not experienced, but hope to be sometime soon.

Hey rx7fc3s87, do you autocross or race at all?

Later,
Nick

From what my grandpa said, based on his RX4 from the late 70s, a rotary engine can give you 200k+ trouble-free miles if you maintain it correctly. It makes sense, considering that there are fewer moving parts inside the engine.

Yea, but how long can it last, rebuilds and all?
does it just keep going forever with you replacing seals and gaskets?
I'd imagine eventually you will need a new(er) engine.
Congrats on 10 posts!
lol
I can't wait to get there....
hehe

I'm hoping thats random rambling as I have no idea what you just said.
Unless I need to seek someone named "Shooting the bird" and wind up seeing "picard" ...

I'm a student at mechanical engineering student at OIT in Klamath Falls, but for winter break I'll be either in Medford or Rouge River. (Going from mom's house to dad's house.) I'll PM you my number.
