87 N/A is 'chugging' ?!?!?

My 87 N/A *auto trans was running fairly smoothe aside from being practically ball-less in low rpms.

Sometimes and pretty much all day today :-( when attempting to put my down on the gas its as if the car is hesitating / borderline stalling / chugging, call it what you will, i try to explain :-P

I can ease off the gas and allow it to get to what i think is 3k rpms (broken tach) and then floor it and it seems fine. However from stop to probably 40-50 kph it is either completely ball-less when floored, or chuggs and hesitates, in order to actually 'go' with the car at times i must give very little gas until i feel the car allowing me to give it more gas, and i can floor it.

I have not yet checked my cats however im sure they are blocked and fubar'd as i can smell that dirty cat fuel smell when i try 'push' the car.

Did the Brand new plugs + wires, oil + filter..helped a bit but still having the same issue :-(

What do you guys think?

Regards,
Ziplock

Leaving my dad's place now heading home, going to richen the mix via the bypass screw on top of the intake manifold, and see if that helps.

My 88 N/A 5spd did this as well. At around 2500 to 3000 rpms it would hesitate while roddin on it. I believe that the ground under the intake has to do with it. Its the ground for the ECU. I had mine tightened and I havent had the problem since. My cats are removed and mine still did it. You should put a test pipe on your car. It makes it quicker as well, you just have to have your air pump open your 5th and 6th ports. Hope this helps!

Ok well after driving for a bit we realised the car smelled terrible of gas.

Did not locate any leaks after extensive checking, so leaned out the A/F mixture as much as possible before it wouldnt idle from the variable resistor screw, and leaned it quite a bit on the intake manifold. The car seems to try to chug evvvver so slighly, (but maybe thats my brain expecting it) never the less the poo fuel smell dissapeared and she allowed me to give much more throttle. However the car has no torque in low rpms seems ball-less until it starts to rev higher. RX7 Racer 84 thank you I will check the ground for the ecu. What do you mean by a test pipe? and could you explain this air pump think because i thought that was something for emissions, ive seen that kind of thing in some other old cars like MGBs.

Cheers Zip

Aux ports wired open would only cause low power, not borderline stalling.
