Question '87 base/SE to GTU conversion

I really want either an '87 Sport or an 88 GTU, but finding one with low enough miles that's well taken care of that isn't across the country has been close to impossible. So...that leads me to the question of the process of converting a base s4 rx-7 to 88 GTU specs.

Is it feasible? Will the parts and labor double the expense of buying the car?

What exactly would need to be added/changed in a 87 or 88 base to make it a GTU?

Thanks for the help.

Five lug swap, 15x6 wheels, LSD rear differential if you are going for the GTU package (not necessary to build it into a Sport), and GXL anti-sway bars are the significant upgrades. I would get aftermarket struts instead of trying to find OEM Mazda struts for the GTU or sport.

There is also the cosmetic stuff like the different seats and door panels. I would just build up a base model into your own performance car . . which is what I did to my 87 base. It is far superior to any stock GTU or sport.

Yeah. That doesnt sound like a bad idea at all. This way I would be able to customize it to my exact needs and make it even better. Kind of common sense/logical, but the GTU/Sport makes more sense financially.

nope, it doesn't...over time you'll end up swapping out those parts too if a base is what you can find and it's a nice example and a good price then jump on it. brake upgrades for the street on any FC can be limited to pads/lines/fluid with healthy rotors and calipers. springs/struts are compatible with all models and you'll want aftermarket stuff. a GXL LSD is easy to find, cheap and a direct bolt in on any S4 NA. 16X7 inch aftermarket wheels are plentiful for the base offset and CHEAP with quality tires (maybe $599). I'd recommend a nice 5 spoke and beefy 225/50/16 tires (you may need a small spacer up front). get yourself a nice exhaust (many options) and a simple intake setup and you've got an FC that handles with the best of them and has a nice upgrade in the power dept. (without cats). good luck!!

Thanks man. I'm looking forward to my N/A money pit. Though, it will be a lot shallower than a t2 or....shudder...FD money pit.

It will also be more dependable, get better gas mileage, and not run your life like a hot chick or drug habit would.

they really are great cars...there are some things you should buy upon purchasing the car...plan on a major tune up, replace all coolant hoses and get a new water pump. You don't want a hose to burst or have your water pump fail after buying the car, it could kill your motor and it's cheap preventative maintenance that you won't have to worry about for years.
