86 RX7 Rebuild

i want to rebuild my engine but not sure what way to go. im gonna be doing all the work myself because it is not my daily driver. and i also want to get a flush mount headlight and replace the gauges inside and the wheel along with the climate control to make the car look more attractive internally. if anyone can help me with any of this i would really appreciate it. https://www.rx7club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Step 1. RESEARCH and search the boards.

Step 2. Figure out what you want out of a rebuild vs realistic goals. Emissions? Power? New Seals/What kind of seals? Porting? S5 intake? Flywheel? Basic rebuild?

Step 3. Research some more.

Step 4. Research some more.

Step 5. Ask the board questions you are still unsure about.

RotaryRessurection has the best rebuild write up ever. You can also purchase the rotary rebuild movie from Atkins or Mazdatrix.

RR's rebuild page.

Wow.... wow.... wait, wait, wait! Before you do ANYTHING else, search these boards all about a 13b => turbo swap. The information is abundant on this topic, you are going to need all you can get. It's not just plug and play..... you gotta think about fuel: management, bigger injectors, etc....and many other things. You can rebuild the engine yourself and get the mileage you want out of it, but turbo's kill rotaries (and all engines for that matter) when they are not dealt with in the right manner..... and where the hell are you getting a port job done for 50 bucks? I want in on that! (or do I?)

the port job is from my brothers friend my bros buying a car from him so he gives us breaks on work.

how much power would i be able to get out of the engine without the turbo? and if i did get it i was planning on replacing all the fuel system anyway because of the age i dont want something failing without a turbo and turning my engine into a grenade.

Man you really gotta do some research, all this has been covered before... just hit the search button and search "turbo swap" all you will ever want to know is there, i promise.

Meh, lay off the turbo unless you got the cash. A JDM turbo engine is ~$1500 IIRC, but it's often ready to blow. Plus you gotta get what you need to make it work in your NA. But like he said, NA or turbo you just gotta search the forum to see how. To rebuild an engine it's up to $1400 for the seals, plus another $600 for new housings if yours are bad. Besides tools, etc. you need a clean garage that won't be disturbed and a lot of time. But it's not supposed to be that hard.

i never planned on it being cheap this is my secondary car that i have to mess with and get it up to speed. i want it to go FAST! probably the only reason i want the turbo is because i know i get quite a performance boost and i love the sound of the BOV's. also one more question i started the car for the first time in like a year in a half (at the guys house where i bought it) and it smoked white like it had bad coolant seals. well when i started it today nothing. no smoke just ran fine. is this a sign of the seals going bad or are they actually good and it was just moisture build up around engine because of how long it was sitting and the temp. its been inthe 40-50 range here the last couple weeks.

in response to everyone telling me research the 13b turbo swap issue, i dont want to swap in a already built turbo motor i wanna make this n/a 13b into a turbo motor

Everything must be custom built for that. It's much cheaper and easier to swap in turbo motor.

And an RX-7 is quite cheap & low on labor to own if you take care of it. Mine is. Even an old Civic is trouble if you get a bad one and beat it up some more. So whatever you do, do it right and don't cut corners or you'll have to put in more time and money later.

The FAQ will answer most of your questions and is the first place to go before posting. Everything you have asked has been covered before.

Here's info on what's involved in an engine rebuild:

Can I Rebuild My Rotary Engine? How Do I Rebuild My Rotary?
In general, anyone with a bit of mechanical skill and the ability to follow directions can successfully rebuild a rotary.
RotaryResurrection has written an excellent and detailed article on the process here:
http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/rebuildwriteup.htm
In addition, there are two archived topics which cover rebuilds and porting:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=639375
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=374810

Also in the FAQ is information on how to swap the TII engine into the NA, or how to turbocharge the NA engine:

Can I swap a Turbo engine/Jspec engine/13BT/etc into my Non Turbo?
Yes, check these links:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=26647
http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/ro...conversion.htm

What Turbo kits can I add onto my non turbo RX-7?
There are no longer kits formally made at the time of this post, however there are companies from time to time that do make available non turbo to Turbo Kits. Because most of these companies stop building the kits, or go out of business in short time, it is impossible to keep active links for them.

Most people that turbo a non turbo make their own kits:
Using the stock TII turbo, exhaust manifold with spacer, NA intakes and NA ECU:

Using the stock TII turbo, exhaust manifold, intakes, ECU:
http://forum.teamfc3s.org/showthread.php?t=37694

Turbo-NA Forum:
http://www.aaroncake.net/forum/forum...urbocharged+NA

Turbocharging the NA engine will require a good deal of fabrication and effort. If you have the time, talent and desire to do so then it can be very rewarding. But for 99% of people, swapping in the TII engine is a far easier thing to do.

ok then if it going to be more expensive and harder i guess i will just get a TII engine and swap it in then. so do i have to rethink my entire rebuild now? do i need different seals or gaskets?

Intake Gaskets are different but the rest should be the same, Seals are the same. Find a S4 TII Motor to make the swap easy. If you get a JDM motor, rebuild it. Or you might be able to find a complete TII swap in the parts for sale section.
