Question 86 rx7 out of time?

I recently picked up an 86 rx7 in mint shape for cheap. I am the 3rd owner, and the car only has 70k miles. The guy I bought it from said it was running fine. He took off from a stoplight, rapped it up a bit in first, and when he hit second there was no power. That's how it is now. I have no experience with rotary motors, but a friend that claims to says it sounds like a broken tooth on the timing gear. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Jer

Timing gear? There are no timing belts.

Your friend doesn't know anything about rotary engines man. They have not timming gears or chains or any of that crap. If your not getting power the worst case scenareio is a blown engine. First check all your electrical stuff like your AFM injectors fuel pump etc.

Read the FAQ at the top...QUICK! And read up on how a rotary works. Saying that it might have broken a tooth on the timing chain kinda opens you up to some good natured flaming.

Question ok, if it aint out of time, what is it

(see rx7 out of time) would a motor just go out like that, or could something else let loose or go out? The guy swears it was running great and hauled ***, then just lost all power on that one 1st to 2nd shift. It will still start, but has no power. Any input appreciated--------

You should really stick to the same thread for the same problem. Most people won't bother to look at your original post, especially once it gets bumped off the 1st page or 2. I'd copy what you just wrote right now and paste it as a reply to your original post.

How does it sound? Does it idle good? You either blew a vac hose off, lost an apex seal, or something of the sort. Haul it to a mazda dealer and get a compression check, then go from there.

Kay, don't need no flaming, just don't know squat about rotary engines. What would cause this sudden power loss? Would a motor blow just like that, or could it be something else?

Well, does it idle at all?? If it idles reasonably well, then it's not something terminal. If it does not idle, but takes a lot of throttle pedal and spinning to get it to even start, then maybe it is terminal. When an apex seal goes...there is no noticable warning before hand. No knocking, rattle or bumping, just zap, rough running and no power at all.
