86 Rx7 Air Pump and air conditioning and power steering
Hello..I have an 86 rx7..I was wanting to remove the air conditioner, the power steering and the air pump..What I was wondering is what exactly this air pump does..can I remove it to free up weight..??or is my engine dependent on this air pump..I have seen pics of 13b's with just the alternator pulley..I drive the car around town..the air conditioner hasn't worked since I bought the car and tell you the truth i don't need it..Power steering is another thing..My Civic Doesn't have it so why should my rx7..I am used to turning with no power steering but would it hurt if I removed it??Please Help me out...

I wish I was driving!
it'd be great if the search function wasn't disabled right now...
remove them shaves about 100-125 lbs, cleans up the engine bay, and gain's hp by removing parasytic losses fromthe engine.
Air pump supplies air to the cat, and prevents it from burning out(in the most simplest terms, I know it is not correct). You ned to have a straight pipe or a knocked out cat first, and an ACV block off plate.
Go ahead and yank out the a/c. Remove all the lines, the compressor, and the condensor in front of the rad. just disconnect the lines where they enter the firewall and throw some elctricians tape on them.
for the p/s, remove the lines, and then couple the lines wehere they enter the steering rack itself together. This allows the two sides of the rack to equalize pressure, and allows it to be a little easier to turn. Leave as much of the fluid (Type f atf) in it as you cam)
Remove both a/c and p/s fuses too.
Ditch the pumps, and the bracket that mounts them.
If you are willing to ditch your cats (and any hope of passing smog), write back, otherwise, leave your air pump on.

The ACV, or Air Check Valve, supplies air from the air pump to the catalytic converter via the Air Pump. It looks like a little cylinder on the passenger side of the engine, above the exhaust manifold. Pick up a Hayne's manual, and it shows pics and a how to on removal. Now there are two ways to block it off. I got a pre-cut block off plate. You can pick one up for $10 at http://www.k2rd.com/Online_Catalog/FC3S/FC3S-index.htm Or you can go to Lowe's, and get some aluminum, silicone sealant, and use the stock bolts, and make one yourself. Good luck!!

Oh yeah, Air Pump removal takes about 10 minutes, and make sure the A/C is decharged before you uninstall it. I should be able to remove mine this afternoon. I will post a how to later, if all goes well!!
