86 backfiring and flooding

hi, I recently purchase an 86 rx7, and im in need of some technical guidance. Today I started the car up, and the car would not idle until it warmed up to operating temperature. Whenever the I reved up the car hard it was backfiring into the intake and bucking like crazy. I tried to see what happened when I put the engine under load and it died. I have not been able to start her since. I pulled the fuel fuse and cranked to try to clear her out, and she still refuses to start. even while shes running she smells like gas. The guy I bought her from knew little about rotarys, and he changed spark plugs. im wondering if perhaps he swaped the leading with the trailing, or whether he jacked up the timing somehow, anyways any guidance would be greatly appreciated

HI Dj

Sounds like your car needs an ignition adjustment, much likely followed by fuel mixture adj. Not necesarely in that order.
