80A main to 100A main???

I have an 88 turbo. I damaged my 80a main fuse. As you know, that is the fuse that is bolted down. I went to the salvage yard to get another one, but they were all taken. They did have an MX3 with the same type of fuse, but it was a 100a fuse. Will I burn out/damage anything if I use this fuse?

if it's suppose to be an 80A fuse...I wouldn't replace it with a 100A fuse, but that's just me.

I would say yes. Generally using a bigger rated fuse, especially one as important as your MAIN is not recommended. Mazda does not want more than 80 Amps flowing through the main circuit. I would not put a 100A fuse there.

You will not burn anything out, unless the reason you "damaged" the 80 amp main fuse is if you have some kind of fault in the charging system... the fuse itself doesnt do anything during normal operation of the car..

if your 80 amp main fuse blew..... then there is another problem that needs addressed.... and I wouldn't go putting a 100 amp fuse in there...

Go to the a parts store like oreilly's - I got an 80amp MAIN fuse there. It was just a couple bucks. Why are you getting fuses from a junkyard?

I went to the yard cus I didn't think I would find the Main at the parts store, I'll try it out.

I damaged it trying to take it out. I was tired and pissed off at the time and didn't think. I just started yanking at is and broke it.

Sounds like you have Zkeller/YearsOfDecay disease... Next time you get aggrivated and want to start ripping on things... do what our therapist tells us to do... Quit.... come back in the morning... You save a lot of time, effort and, most of all, money that way!!!!!!!

Lots of times, old fuses just blow out. I'd get at least 2 new one's and just reinstall the fuse. If it stays good, great. If not then you will have to start looking into what's wrong.

HUH? I dont think i have ever had a fuse just "blow out" because it had nothing better to do. Fuses blow when there is excessive load on the related circuit. Not because they are little trixters and like to **** with you.

Or if your alternator goes out...

Don't feel too bad (original poster), I did the same thing the first time I tried to remove it, lol. I spent like 15 minutes yanking on it (and eventually destroying it) before I relaxed and saw the little 'door' that hides the bolts, lol.

Well, I just replaced the 100A fuse in my 90 FC3C, bought two, BRAND NEW ONES, total cost, with tax, of course, $4.27 for both. I wonder how much gas you used to get to the junk yard?

WTF are you doing at the junk yard looking for fuses? Is that where you get the oil and filter for an oil change?

Give me your home address, and I'll send the $ 20 for the fuses , filter , and oil! I spend more money on tire foam, soap, and wax in a month than I bet you do in gas.

Give up the breakfast burrito, and take care of your car!

I work on industrial equipment that's over 30 years old. About 5 years ago we went through each machine and changed the fuses because we started having very intermittent problems on them. No "unexplainable" problems since. I just figure these cars are almost 20 years old and in a enviornment with very hot and cold and lots of vibration. An occasional fuse is bound to go after so much time. That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it.

Well, your theory is wrong. Chances are when you changed the fuses there was some corrosion on the contacts that were giving you intermittent problems. But as far as the fuse itself, I guarantee you it wasnt the problem. Fuses just dont sometimes work, and sometimes not work.

The fuse was $2. I ended up going to the parts store today and picked up the right one for $2.**. It was a waste of money at the yard, oh well.
