6PI. better wire opened or not working?

Hi all, this is my question, i have a 1990 vert NA (S5). I can't do all the work to clean the 5th and 6th ports (there is no service here), so, which is the better option? to keep the ports opened or just let them not working? and which is the best way to keep them opened? only a wire? and what if the VDI isn't working too? keep it opened too?

thanks from Chile!

I just went to mazdatrix today and one of the guys (John) told me that my 5th and 6th ports are open, you know permanently opened cuz the guy that owned the car before me, opened em up. Anyway what he said to me was that they're better open than not working but they kinda make ur low end drag. So your low end is slower but ur top end kicks in faster is my guess because i feel a large amount of power once i hit 2.5 grand which is waaaaay before the secondaries are supposed to kick in. I dont know how to keep them open but they are and so thats how they'll stay.

One of mine was gummed up when I put it back in.

I pulled off one of the vacuum tubes on the UIM near the TB, and sucked just a very little bit of seafoam into the engine, with the ports held open, so that they would get saturated in the stuff. Then when I sucked a bit down, not even an 1/8th of the can, I turned the engine off and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Every once in a while moving the ports up and down. I could slowly feel them loosen.

After that, I started up the car and let it run for about 30 minutes. sleeves open very smooth now. Very nice IMO.

Anywho, good luck. Wiring them open sucks. I had mine removed when I first bought the car, and after putting them in, I noticed a bit more torque down low, and then they open to allow higher air flow at the higher RPM.

I strongly suggest trying to clean them as mentioned. Don't use too much seafoam though. Also, I don't really suggest using any vacuum tube other then one on the UIM. If you use the one on the IIM near the drivers side in the front, it might only clean the front sleeve. I chose the UIM one because it allowed the seafoam to cover the most of the manifolds and sleeves.

I am sure one of the gurus will chime in and let me know if I am wrong.

It takes very little effort to clean the aux ports generally. For the most part an external cleaning of the actuators and rods will get them working again. If you have to go into the intake, pulling the upper intake is not hard.

It's FAR better to have working aux ports. If you wire them open, the car will be slower overall due to the horrid low end. If you wire them closed, your top end will suck.

Same with VDI.

thanks all. I'm going to lubricate the actuators and rods. Is really hard take out the actuators? which is the best lubricant? if they stay closed i'll tray the seafoam tip.

thanks again

You have to take off the LIM to take the actuators OUT. Do what Mr Cake says and lube everything up real good..., just be careful... anything you put in there will drain into the engine.. including sockets, dirt, food, carbon, insects, etc.

If it were me, I'd pull the UIM, disconnect the actuators from the LIM, move them back and forth a bunch.. hit them with WD40 or something... move them some more... rinse repeat. Just try not to get too much crap into your engine.

Taking off the LIM isn't too hard though... and is definitely the right way to do it. Replace any gaskets you expose. Good time to replace the primary fuel rail as well.. good preventative maintenance. Maybe swap out some of your brittle vacuum lines...

Hope that helps.
