5th gear is gone
i've searched...but havent found anything that specifically identifies the problem i'm having. i've got an S5 NA tranny bolted up to an S5 T2 motor. alot of people have lost 5th and reverse but i've only lost 5th. there's nothing there. it goes into the spot but doesnt grab anything...if i let go it just pops right back into neutral. anyone have any ideas? i've heard something about a 5th gear switch maybe jamming but i wouldnt mind a bit more of an idea pool. thanks.

thats the thing though. i bought the car just a few days ago. whole way home 5th gear worked fine. went for a cruise for the evening and on the way home i tried putting it into 5th and all of a sudden it wasnt there.

ive got this same problem, i can feel it almost go into the gate, but it wont go, at first i thought syncros but every combo of clutching and rev matching didn't do anything. So now im leaning toward a bent shifter fork. Just out of curiosity what is it you've heard about the 5 th gear switch jamming up?
this is an s4 n/a tranny btw

The 5th gear switch reference you mentioned is when the transmission gets stuck in 5th gear. Removing the 5th/reverse switch allows you to stick a screw driver inside and pop the shift rod back in place.
A bent shift rod (there are 3 of them) or gear selector is unlikely. They're all about 1/2" thick steel rod. And 5th / Reverse both use the same rod. Forward is Reverse & back is 5th. So anything affecting the linkage for 5th, would affect Reverse as well. A problem with the synchro/gear itself is more likely. It will need to be opened up or replaced.
