AZ Steering Rack going bad?

I've got a S4 Manual rack and it's in my drift car.

My Steering wheel has developed play and it's pretty scary.
It's a Stock steering wheel and I can move it about 3 inches back and forth before it engages.

Any one know if I can correct this by adjusting the backlash/gapping on the steering input shaft?

Should I worry about any thing else?

Check your rack bushings and the u-joint clamps in the column.
