Unhappy 5th and 6th port problems

So, after reading about all the problems and issues people have with the 5th and 6th ports, i decided to go out and actualy see if mine were working (never thought to check before, and low and behold, i had someone rev it up to 7 grand and they didnt move a bit. After i got the intake tube off i went and reached down there, it seems like the actuators move up and down a little bit, but they dont spin the valves at all.

I went and sprayed them down with some wd40 and let it sit for about an hour... im about to go outside and see if i cant move them at all... and then maybe go and at least take off the easier to get to (back towards the firewall) acuator and see if i cant move the valve by hand...

does anyone know of any better way to free the stuck valves... (id really rather not take apart my entire intake :p)

I guess my two biggest questions which i havent been able to find an answer to is how much force should i try to turn them to break them free with... and also, does anyone have any pictures or can they describe which way is open and which way is closed... cuz i would kinda like to know which way they are stuck.

Thanks all, and I hope I dont **** anyone off for asking a kinda common question... but i havent been able to find much detail on fixing them... just getting them to work when you change the exaust or take the airpump off... but not how to unfreeze them.

If you aren't in gear (ie, moving), I think there is no load on engine therefore no actuator movement

well if you reved it to 7k in neutral the sorts will not open. You need to put some grease on the rods of the actuators and o out for a spirited drive then check if they moved the grease.

the ports dont open unless ur in gear, so thats probly why they dont move!! take off the actuators and see if u can push the rod up and down. this is the only way that i know of to actually see if theyre workin'!!

ok, the valves rotate, the actuators move, the selnoid works, i put some grease on the rods, and wasnt able to see any motion of them... is there any other way to check

I was thinking of just wiring them open, and then going for a drive and just seeing if it felt the same, good ol seat of the pants testing... but if anyone knows of a slightly more technical way of doing it, please lemmi know

yup, took it all the way up to 8k several times, and the grease looked the same as when i put it there... so im not really sure, i think i might go try wireing them open and seeing how that feels

thats bullshit cause my 5th and 6th ports open when i just rev it up in nutral and am not driving my car. so i dont know i have seen them open with my own eyes. it dont matter if there is any load on the motor. the ports open at 3800 rpm no matter what.

Then they should work. Tee in a pressure gauge to the line, run it inside the car and verify they are getting the proper pressure needed to open.

S4 should open just by reving the engine regardless of load, S5 is load dependent.

roataryracer1, i think that might be because you have an s4... which does the 6port actuation via the exaust, whereas on the s5 engine it does it from the airpump... can anyone confirm this?

Also, how feelable should the 6th port actuation be... and also how feelable should when the vdi engages be... because i have gone and taken a lot of test drives today, most of them to past 7k, with different vac lines removed, and with the 6pi selnoid unpluged, and then with it and the vdi selnoid unpluged and I really cant notice a difference...

so how much does everyone else notice these systems kicking in... cuz i think combined they are supposed to make like 25 - 45 hp.... and i should be able to feel that at least a lil

if s4's rely on exhaustto open the 5th and 6th ports, then why do they have air pumps? isnt the air pump used to open the ports on all n/a's?

ahh, ok, i was just going on numbers i picked up from somewhere...

rotaryracer1, the air pump is there for emissions, it pumps air into the main cat to help it reduce i cant remember which type NOx maybe, ... but regardless, its there to help the cat... and also to provide positive pressure for some other things as well as the anti afterburn system and some other stuff

its main point was always emissions... but they just happened to use the rpm based variable air pressure to do other things with as well

the air pump is mainly used for adding fresh air to the catalitic converters. Only S5 cars use the pump to actuate the ports.
