3rd Gen Housings?

I've noticed a lot of people opting to use them on their T2's. Would someone mind explaining what benefits they offer?

Thanks a lot

They have a stronger chrome that has a different material that also helps keep the engine lubricated.

The housings don't have intakes or holes for bolts. The intake manifolds bolt to the irons. So how would FD housings give you this ability? And you can get adapters to run the FD lim off of a regular 13bt block anyways.

LINK??

so far for my next build then it looks like S5 irons and 3rd gen rotor housings and an adapter to run 3rd gen LIM. Sound good?

I'm just gonna use the t2 manifolds, I don't think there is really that much of a performance increase with the fd manifolds but you can go for it anyways.

Good point :P Sorry!

But er...what about exhaust manifold? Wouldn't you have to use something from/for an FD? Unless the exhaust ports are in the same spot, which I seem to remember them being in a much different spot..

The exhaust ports are the same. It's a very common mod when rebuilding to use fd housings instead of the 13bt housings.

im currently using FD housings and they have the same exhaust ports, my S4 Exhaust manifold bolted right up to it. only thing is i now have 2 knock sensors since my car is an s4 the knock sensor is on the irons, and the fd housing has the sensor on the housing

You don't have to put the knock sensors into the housings.

I would venture to say ANY knock sensor is going to be right near the spark plugs. That means in the housing not the iron. Where would the knocking start? Right at the hotest part of the cycle.

My TII has the sensor in the housing right above the spark plug.

S4 had the sensor on the center iron for some reason, or another.
S5 and S6 had it on the rotor housings, near the sparkplug, closer to the action as it should be.

My Mazdatrix built S5 engine also used S6 housings and other parts. Its common for quality builders to utilize the newest/best offerings from Mazda when assembling engines. If its a direct replacement for an older design and its an improvment, why wouldnt you? This applies to housings, apex seals, corner seals,springs,ect.....
