3rd gen engine swap
3rd gen engine swap
is it posable to put a 3rd gen engine in the 2nd gen car. i have been researching for months on what car i should make the most bad *** roadstear from, orginaly wanting a mkiii supra, but the cost for everything that breaks it to much, and the rx7 is much better balanced. also, can u put the rx8 engine in there or is it to much of a hasle for nothing better.
No, and no. If you want to do something the "right" way and you dont have a lot of knowledge, sell your NA before you get in too deep, and buy a T2. you COULD turbo your NA (which is what im doing) or you COULD do a full T2 swap (t2 engine, direct bolt in) with T2 drivetrain, etc etc. If you wanna do a big project, id go for this, but if you dont know much, and just want to go faster, i would suggest getting a new car (t2)
its easier to do a 13B-RE and its a great engine. look into that one.
have you seen where the engine mounts are on the RE vs the REW ? are you gonna tell me an RE isnt good for 500+ to the wheels easy? in fact, carlos gonzalez has a ~900hp (without nitrous) 7.837second (as of aug, 03) drag second gen with an RE motor (s4 rotors).
i believe the RE is a pretty much drop in project, but i'm not quite sure (at all!). this topic has been discussed many times. most people will say "no" to the -rew (as in the FAQ) and others, as i have, may suggest the -re.

My friend cooper (revinrx7 on here) dropped an re into his s4TII in about an hour. $1500 shipped to his door plus $200 for the mounts from fc3s.org and one hour of his time. Thats pretty bolt in if you ask me

first of all, if this is a stupid question, sry. second i dont have an na, i have a ******* lousy *** 89 nissan sentra, and third, this is going to be a lot out racer so i need to know if i did do the swap how much hp can i expect with mild engine mods (no internal stuff plz) and how much boost the engine can hold. i have been told that rotarys can hold crazy mad amounts of boost no prob.

A friend in Japan told me that if you get a mount conversion kit (available in Japan, no info just yet on that) and use a Power FC and the stock FD harness, then the 13B-REW isn't a bad swap. I'm not sure if you would consider it a "drop in" or easy, but he has seen it done several times and it apparently is getting quite popular in Japan. From my understanding, the mount locations and wiring are the big issues that make this an "impossible" swap.
His FC has a 20B in it... so he hasn't done it himself yet, but before his tour of duty is up, he's going to source me some of the conversion mounts, might be able to find someone over here to duplicate them.
I have no other details on this, but I trust the souce, and I'll try to get some more details soon. My S4 engine is still running strong, so reasearching this hasn't been a big priority to me yet.
Based on your questions, it sounds like you're looking for straightline power, which in that case, I suggest going back to looking at the MKIII Supra. You are missing the whole point of the RX-7 if you are building it to be fast in a straight line. Before you get offended, realize that these cars do not require "mad crazy amounts of boost" to be faster than most cars in every driving situation EXCEPT in a straight line.
And also, between this and the Supra, I would say you have more things go wrong on the RX-7 than the Supra, so you may not be getting off as cheaply as you think you are.

I have done the REW into my FC. It's a cool swap and my sequentials are fully functional. Lots of R+D time and electrical work. The mounts were pretty simple though I've seen a few others that I think would be better. If you're going for all out racer. I hate to say it but just buy a 3rd gen. You'll be amazed at the difference in handling, between the two vehicles. Of course a 3rd gen is a bit more pricey. But start off right. I love my car , but would take a 3rd gen in a second.
BTW if you can't do everything yourself, it's definately not worth it/cost effective.

im not possative but IIRC the ports on the s4 turbo are actualy the largest ports of any turbo'd 13b. baisically any modded turbo rotary can make more power than could ever be used on the street or an auto-x and arguably so on a road coarse.
for the cost and trouble it would take you to mount a stock 13b-rew in your FC, you could probobly have 250-300+ wheel HP out of a tii.

Engine management is the main problem in this swap.
You either go Standalone or from the sounds of it
Mating a power FC to the FD harness and then splicing in the areas needed to mate to a FC interioir harness.
