3k...how to spend?

I got 3k to drop into an 87 NA gxl...here are my thoughts.....

1. new header, dp, gut all but the main cat, single muffler that replaces y pipe, two 2.25 straight pipes
2. New springs/roll kit (sway bar)/shocks/struts
3. Hks Injector kit/plugs/wires
4. New clutch/flywheel
5. Port the tb

Already got an hks mega airflow intake, and light wheels with yokohoma rubber (225's).

Any changes or suggestions?

I dont' see th eneed for the injector kit.

Replace main cat with a high flow piece (bonez)
Get some GOOD shocks.
Strut tower brace (front/rear)
Aluminum hood.
89 Tail lights
New drivers seat if it's damaged.
TB Mod
and if you have money left over.. NOS

DOn't port the TB, the stock ECU will not be able to handle all of the excess air, and it will actually cause a loss in performance. I say, pull the engine, and have it reubilt and streetported. Or, keep saving, and here in a few months, buy a TII. If you want to do just bolt ons, go for good shocks, good springs, full Racing Beat exhaust, and a good clutch.

Sell the n/a and use the profit + the $3000 as a down payment for an FD.

It's not that we don't like the FD, but we just like the classic style of FC. You can't complain about the style of a 90 Turbo!

Keep saving and get a Turbo II. That is where the real power is.

If I'm not mistaken, dp's are for turbo cars. I think the equivalent of a dp would be headers for an n/a. Correct be if I'm wrong.

A n/a dp replaces the 2 pre-cats. Racing Beat calls it a Down Pipe.

DUDE, for $3K you almost have the total amount for a good condition TurboII.

Here is what I say:

KEEP the N/A, and look for a Turbo II.

Now yo uhave 2 options.

1.) Look for a Turbo II with a Blonw Engine for less than $1K, and have it rebuilt and ported with the rest of the money, (a lil bit extra will be needed)

2.) You can buy a Turbo II in workign conditions, but you may not realy know what condition it will be in.

Ya I say buy a TII with the $3k and then sell the NA and use the NA profit for mods.

I agree, keep the N/A and get a S4 TII. That is my eventual plan. I love my n/a too much to get rid of her.

send the motor out to SDJ motorsports and have them do their street port and rebuild, their exhaust, tune it, etc. etc.. they're GREAT.

Put it this way: In SCCA in the ITA class (1st gen 12A), you can't port the motor at all, just do a little carb work, full exhaust, and balancing. They got (I think) 172hp on the dyno out of the 12A WITHOUT porting. They're good at what they do.

S4=crappier turbo
S5=equal better turbo

I have an S5 (91' TII) and have done the following turbo back racing beat exhaust, bonez intake, S-AFC, turbo timer, Walbro fuel pump, boost and A/F gauges, shift light, short throw shifter. Just order an ACT clutch, greddy inter cooler, some yokahama AVS sports (225's) RX7store brake kit, racing beat light weight steel fly wheel. Still have the 720cc injectors to put in and an underdrive pulley. Right now with the mods on it, it ran a 13.8@101 that was with a slipping clutch since then I put in a RAM powergrip clutch (take it from me peice of sh*t) and took it back to the strip but now I can't get traction because of the tires on it (made by sprint? with a 400 tread wear) But I am guessin once I put on the intercooler and new tires I will be seeing 12's.

Now try to get a N/A in the 12's with the same money and still have it streetable. So I agree with RICO and them sell the N/A and get an S5 TII (89-91').

Put $2000 in a Roth IRA and use the rest for your car. You'll really appreciate it 25 or 30 years from now.

If anyone can find a S5 (kouki) TII for 3k that does not have a blown engine and is in good shape, I will buy it. A worthwhile S5 TII should be $4k +. Keep the n/a as a daily driver, and get a S4 (or blown S5) TII, and have a project car. Build it up, and here in a year, have a 12 second TII...
