Thumbs up 2nd Gen RX-7 Engine Conversions

Im fairlt new to the RX-7 family. I've always liked the styling of the cars but was never a fan of the rotary power plant so Im putting a 560 hp sbc in my 86. It also has a NOS cheater system on top of this. I will be posting pics. I would also like to hear from anyone who have done this conversion and has any helpful info.

You will only get adverse reactions from board members by putting in an SBC into an RX7.

It's your car though, have fun.

All i know is that the lore of the rotary seems to end up in one place...A blown engine. Usually 3 times before 100k miles. I dont want to hear your whining. I asked for info on the conversions.

That's only on the 3rd gens. Mine has 146k on the original engine. There are many more like mine that have even more miles.

152k miles on my first engine and still going strong. I also know the guy that owns a third gen and his car has 89k miles on it on the original engine. I suggest you get your facts straight before you say dumb **** like that. Ask around a lot of rotari engine last longer than piston engines.

NO engine will last long...unless you take good care of it. Rotaries just need a little more TLC than piston engines.

i contemplated putting a 350 into my car when i first got the seven over a year ago. 50% of my friends agreed with the easy "push-rod" power...and 50% shunned me and said that if i did it, they wouldnt talk to me anymore lol....needless to say, i decided to stay with the rotary after i researched it.

Its your car...do with it what you want....the SBC is easy, proven, power. But yet, so is forced induction. Either way, i'll give you props because your tackling a project and a somewhat difficult one at that. Have fun with it.....

and you'll prob want to join the forum on www.v8rx7.com ...they'll be much easier on you

You're quite friendly aren't you? My engine has 120,000k on it, and I've done every sort of abuse to it, save wheel to wheel racing.

Feel free to critcise the rotary, just not when you're asking someone to help you on a rotary forum.

I had an NA motor that blew at 114k. I took excellent care of it. Also, those who are posting their mileage numbers, please state whether NA or turbo

Throwing in a piston engine is much better than parting it out or letting it rot in a field. At least he's keeping it on the road.

This is what pissed me off: "All i know is that the lore of the rotary seems to end up in one place...A blown engine. Usually 3 times before 100k miles. I dont want to hear your whining. I asked for info on the conversions."

He is probably doing it becuase he thinks rotaries will blow up in 33k miles. My car has 152k miles and it is an N/a and like I said I know a guy with an FD with 80+ thousand miels on it and it is not in stock form and he kicks it around a lot. I am ok with him doing a swap but not with him saying that rotaries blow up in 33k miles that is bull **** even rebuilt engines last longer than that. The rotary resurrection site says rebuilds are expected to last about 75k or more miles and that is using the old housings. If you don't beleive me then go read the damn site that is also at a really low cost.

Go ahead, swap it, I'm like some of the others, keep it on the road and out of the fields or JY's...one site that no one seems to have mentioned yet, since it's not RX exclusive, is www.torquecentral.com they're all V8 nuts over there, and they do conversion on a lot of stuff. Good luck to ya, there are some of us who aren't going to absolutely hate you for going non-rotor power .(although if you get ahold of a 10AE and then do the swap, even I will go after you...friendly warning )

First of all, I bought the car from a man in alliance ohio who had already replaced the engine once. The car has 149000 on it and has had 3 engines in it already. Why would I put another 13b in to have it puke itself too. The car was not running and I only paid 250.00 for it. I have a 406 sbc that I have 12k in. It just seems so right!

Ok the fact that tha man needed to replace the engine three times is fucked up he must not know how to change oil or something. You need to realize the fact that rotary engine last just as long a piston engines if not longer. Like I said I am cool with the swap but don't believe for a minute that rotaries need to be replaced every 30-40k miles unless it is a Peripheral port race engine.

I'm sorry I can't help with info on the swap, but you might also try this site:

http://www.grannysspeedshop.com/

Due to the closed mindedness of the immature members of this board, you are likely to only receive ridicule. I applaud your efforts to do what you want to do with YOUR car. After all, it's your car.

But remember, it is a rotary board and only a handful of the members here have done the swap, so there's not much knowledge to tap into anyway.

I love the rotary as much as you guys and would never consider such a swap, but remember, it's his car, and in the end, aren't we all CAR and SPEED enthusiasts?

112,000 miles on my turbo motor before it blew, and it blew because the owner put a RB Turbo Back system on it and didnt do any fuel modifications.
