2 Problems

I am still brining my '88 10th AE T2 back from an early grave.

Problems,
1: i have a stutter once in a while in my idle. about every 1-2 seconds it sounds like the exhaust "pops". I can't check my timing because there is no paint and i cannot feel any notches on the wheel(can't think of the name right now). It's idling right now at almost 800rpm spot on though. TPS is adjusted perfectly with Ohm Meter. no vac leaks i know of. I need to check on the vac line that goes to the wastegate though, pain to get to. this problem occurs when the car is both cold and warm.

2: when i turn the CAS to see if i can effect the timing the idle level changes. looking down on the CAS, if i turn it Counter Clockwise the idle gets more stuttery and goes down. If i turn int Clockwise the sound becomes cleaner and the idle comes up to about 1200rpm. I'm not sure what this means. i consulted my father about this and he said that the higher idle is a good thing. it means the engine is being more efficient with the fuel it is getting. (he's an Engineer... i always get information like that from him)

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with these issues i have.

thank you in advance for your help, jana

to check the timing, mark the right(?) notch with some whiteout... it works...

remember that you have the have the idle under 1000 rpms to set the timing...

1: "I can't check my timing because there is no paint and i cannot feel any notches on the wheel(can't think of the name right now)" so i'm not sure i can put whiteout on the bottom belt Pully. there are just rust spots here and there.

Just spent some time doing searches:
exhaust pop, exhaust stutter, engine stutter, rough idle, engine pop, rough engine all came up with very little to do with my symptoms. i like how the search engine highlights all the search words, makes it easy to find stuff. i found lots on vac leaks etc but I'm not having the rollercoaster effect that is caused from a vac leak.

i'm thinking if i get an A/F Ratio gauge and adjust my CAS and idle down then maybe i should be OK... I really want to get this right. This car was in the back of an old barn for a few years and the lady couln't remeber when it was put there. (old lady) car only has 47k mi on it. and i have all the original docs on it too.

oh well I'll try a few things this weekend. i hope it doesn't blow up.

How long ago did you pull it from the barn? It could even be something as simple as OLD fuel, a clogged air filter, or some nasty little animal that built a home in the exhaust or motor somewhere.

I've been working on it since fall/winter 2004. 1st thing i did when i got it home was drain the fuel out of everything, Airfilter has now since been replaced, had the exhaust off(broke some bolts that have since been rplaced doing so). I have driven the car around the neighborhood a few time (not registered yet) and it pulls great runs nice except for the idle stumble once i a while... and the boost gauge is almost always in the negative except when i really mash on the gas and it then only comes up a little past the 0 mark. not sure if it's a bad gauge or if the turbo is dragging or toast, but that's a completely separate problem.

Rick i really do appriciate you trying to help out, and I'm sorry i keep shutting you down at every turn about this.

I wonder if a can rephrase the question...

would/should turning the CAS Clockwise change or raise my idle from the 800rpm where it is now? or should it only adjust the timing?

thak you again everyone, and thank you Rick for your help

Are all the maintenance items in terms of ignition been replaced by now?
Spark plugs...
Spark plug wires...?

An occasional miss is normal, but it shouldn't be popping out your exhaust...unless you have no cats?

There could also be a problem with your ACV or emissions, as there is an integrated "after burn valve" that is supposed to minimize the popping.

Hey man, I'm new at this too. Just glad I can try to help. You're very welcome.

Here's an article from the boys at TeamFC3S. Maybe it'll help you.

Ted,

1st: i have found your site invaluable throught my resurection precess. Thank you.
good call on the TB mod. the car feels MUCH better.

the car is pretty much stock. the cats are there original exhaust system is still intact... not for long. RB stuff in the mail along with Bones main cat. plugs were recently replaced but not the wires.

there's no real pop coming out the exhaust i just hear a thud and i know it's the sound of expanding gas. would an exhaust leak cause this? i know there is a leak at the main cat where the air feed tube meets the cat, very thing metal there.

I have not looked into the emissions but the ACV works i tested it with 12v and a DMM.

oh yes I have also had the injectors sent out and cleaned they were REALLY bad.

thank you again everyone.
