1991 N/A, Smog Pump/Rats Nest
We picked up a "running" '91 N/A Convertible for the 24 Hours of Lemons race (www.24hoursoflemons.com)
We're stripping the car down to next to nothing, and have turned our attention to the engine bay. A/C is removed, switched to manual rack, etc etc. A lot of this stuff is very straightforward and simple to remove, but going from my old TII to this N/A model is a little different.
The 5/6 ports are actuated by the air pump if I'm not mistaken. All the "emissions crap" doesn't need to work, but I would like to hook the air pump up to where it will actuate those ports. Is there a simple way to get this pump to work those ports and thats all?
EGR etc will be removed as well, this is a race car with no street aspirations anytime soon. There are some good write-ups on the dashpot and secondary valves on the TB that can be removed so that'll be done as well.
Next issue is the Rat's Nest. This will be easy, but I can't find the pictures for it! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ah, another Jalopnik fan, I assume?
S5's don't have an EGR valve.
You're already planning on ditching the secondary throttle valves- and presumably the thermowax and cold start solenoid.
You pretty much have to leave the OMP in place (since the stock ECU needs to see it or it goes into limp mode) but it wouldn't hurt to add a bit of premix to the gas just to be safe.
Most everything else should probably be left in place.
In a fairly low speed endurance situation, seems like driveability would be a good trait to preserve and the stock stuff is fairly robust and works well.
Replace the crusty old vacuum hoses and leave her be- it's not like you're saving a lot of weight or compromising performance.

Thanks for the heads up as far as the rats nest, its just so damned ugly!
As far as low speed, we'll be racing TWS. I did it last year in an FB and saw speeds of 80-90 depending on what part of the track. That was only the smalle loop of the track, and they added a chicane on the long straight to keep the speed down. This year they'll be running a full track so if these heaps stay together and there aren't too many yellow flags, the race should be pretty intense.
Any idea on the air pump? The previous owner disassembled parts and removed some stuff, so its not complete to start. I just want those 5/6 ports to open up!
To give you an idea how good his mechanic skills are: He told us he was collecting parts to install a turbo on it. We popped the trunk when we got home and all the parts were there. An electric blower motor, plulbed into astock TII top mount intercooler. Yup- electric turbo. Scares me what else we may find on this car so we'll have to go through it with a fine tooth comb!

The air pump feeds the ACV (air control valve) which selectively dumps to the cat (which I figure is long gone), the aux. ports and then spits the excess out by the front fender.
If you remove the "muffler" from the dump tube, your car will sound hilarious- completely in the spirit of the series.
As for totally "desmogging" the car, I can't say.
I'm just coming to grips with the systems and since mine is a true daily driver I've had to keep most everything intact.
I somewhat disagree with the "ugly" tag though...most of the vacuum stuff is pretty well tucked away and the engine doesn't have to look messy.
