Thumbs down 1990 FC3C, n/a , manual, still blowing meter fuse, I'm electrically retarted!

Weeks ago, Ice and Karack helped with finding correct fuse, and amperage, for gauges: rpm, temp, batt, oil pressure. Thanks again! But this s.o.b is still blowing fuses. Disconnect battery, install new fuse, start up, fine, drive , all good.

Turn off engine, upon restart, there the little bastard goes again. Can pull fuse out after shutdown, restart, install fuse while running, and its fine, until shutdown, and restart again.

IM ELECTRICALLY RETARDED, either bare wire grounding out, ignition switch, stereo to loud, Im lost. Everything else works. Clock, hazards, all warning-start up lights, head lights, brake lights, overhead lamp, interior door lights, even the dam christmas tree lights, but not gauges.

Any ideas, again, for mentally unstable? Won't drive without temp and oil pressure gauge.

The lights in the Warning Light assy light up off the same fuse that feeds the gauges. It's the METER fuse. So I assume when the METER fuse blows that the Warning Lights assy lights go out also.

So if that's the case, and the gauges never work, I'd pull apart the plug that feeds the two plugs on the back of the instrument cluster and see if your getting any power from the METER fuse to the instrument cluster. On a series four car it would be the black/yellow wire on the plug called CO-3 that feeds CO-1 and CO-2.

That black/yellow wire is fed straight off the METER fuse, a 7.5 amp fuse. Third row from the bottom of the fuse box, third fuse over from the left.

Thanks for the information HAILERS, this is a 90, and the fuse cover says its a 10 amp fuse. It is a Series 5, not 4, so would the wires you are referring to be the same for Series 5, color wise? And I don't know if fuse cover is the right one, I thought it was a 10 amp. Let me know, if you would be so kind, RE: wire colors and fuse. Ill start checking though.

Great help . Thanks a bunch.

That happened to me. I took the dash out so i could get behind the fuse box and found two or three wires fried from touching a ground wire that bolts in that area. Fixed it and no more blown fuse.

Great help Houston, thanks. Got to run to ICEMARKS territory soon, so I hopefully can solve this afternoon. Cars driving me nuts, thank god, gives me a new challenge daily.

Window regulator, wiring, oil filter housing o-rings, water pump, new belts, tps, AFM, o-2 sensor, BAC, ****, thing should be brand new by Christmas, but what a great car.

THANKS AGAIN ALL PEACE THE DOG

The color is the same, Black/Yellow. They just call the connectors another name. They call the ones on the back of the cluster IC-01 and IC-02 and the one that feeds those two FIC-01.

So? Do the idiot light lights go out when the meter fuse blows? Yes is what I assume.

The 90 wiring diagrams can be found at ALLDATA.COM. The price is about a quarter tank of gas. Save them to your hard drive.

The plug called FIC-01 that feeds the other two is located above the steering column and can be had at without pulling the instrument cluster out. I'd pull that plug apart and put in a new fuse and check for 12vdc at the black/yellow wire. IF it is there, leave the plug apart and see if the METER fuse still blows under whatever circumstances it's been blowing before. IF it won't blow anymore, then it's a combination meter problem perhaps.

FIC-01 *seems* to be a twenty pin/socket connector. One should be black/yellow.

OK, from your info, and Ices wiring diagrams, and FSM, about ready to start checking. Light out soon. Just a quick question, might help me out. The fuse is only blowing when I put in reverse. I parallel park each night, and leave in reverse. Left it in drive, didn't blow.

But as soon as I put it in reverse, from either start up, or backing up, instantly blows. Maybe that little bit more might help.

Thanks again guys PEACE THE DOG

One would assume it is then related to the backup light circuit. Do you have a FSM?

Look above you my friend. Have it all. Just can't remember where I saw the info on the reverse. I'll come to me, unless anyone knows.

Get to that shortly, rebuilding the driver side power window regulator right now. Good thing I have endless time, son is gonna have all new parts by Christmas.

And also picked up thermostat at Mazda, o-ring also, and installed it. Showed son how to get air out hoses with petcock, and she is air free and full of liquid H2o and coolant. no leaks.

If anyone knows about reverse, id appreciate . Got to go get cable now.
