1990 Automatic Seatbelts

When I bought the car, the driver's side cable for the automatic seatbelt was cut and has served its purpose well since I have owned the car.

The passenger side cable has now protruded from the pillar and I am not a fan of the automated system anyways. Is it okay to cut the cable and just slide the mechanism that the seatbelt clips into, into the locked position? I wanted to ask before I did such in case this may be considered a safety hazard for my passenger.

I know about the mazda recall but there are no stealerships near me and I just can't be asked to spend time on something like that. I'm going to 6-point harnesses eventually.

IMO it's not really worth tampering with seatbelts like that. Either get it fixed by the stealership for free, (there has to be something within 200 miles?) or go 6-point harness now.

I'm also in the middle of a T2 rear end swap and a 1JZ/R154 engine swap.. So I'm slightly busy. That's why I want a quick fix. I don't have the funds to get a manual conversion and I don't, not will I ever, want automatic seatbelts. I just want to make sure that this is okay from a safety standpoint.

if your in the middle of an engine/trans swap, why worry about the seat belts? afraid your going to crash and burn when your on jackstands pretend driving?

When I said in the middle, I mean, I'm preparing, the car isn't on jacks yet but will be within a week. I still will need to solve the problem and better now than later.

I just need to know if it will work as intended without the cable. I.E as a seatbelt in the locking position.. I'm assuming the cable isn't the only thing holding the mechanism back.

I wonder at what point of modification the dealer says they won't fix your belt? Is a swapped engine too much. The passenger belt on my 89 doesn't go back all the time and I get a light on the idiot cluster.

In most states, the dealer has to prove that the modification caused the failure in order to deny you warranty/recall service. In such a case, I doubt an engine swap could interfere with a defect recalled years before the RX7club and engine swaps existed
