1988 RX7 Convertible *No Cats*
I bought this car not to long ago & it runs just fine but throws a horrible fuel smell after sitting for a while so I decided to do some detective work & I find streight pipe from the manifold to the mufflers???? What's this for & can this cause any damage, this is my first 7 so I don't know but I read somewhere that these cars have like 3 cats?? why so many converters?
Because without them they stink, the cats can be replaced with a 3 way cat which will remove all of the unburned hydrocarbons, as well as the excess no2 , and your cars exaust will no longer smell , as well as be emission compliant
You'll get use to the smell. Also, being its a series 4, you might want to research auxiliary port actuation, being they open from the back pressure in the exhaust caused by the cats. No cats means those ports are not opening, which means the car is going to be very slow.

the reason they made them have 1 main converter and precat was to make them 50 state compliant for emissions.
no, it cant damage anything, but you might want to find a way to actuate the 5th and 6th ports.
there is thread after thread about all this though, please search next time

I would suggest a high flow converter. It will run cleaner and you will not lose any performance, it will also quiet it down a little bit. You will not smell as bad when you get done driving the car
I speak from experience, when my vert was NA I had a RB silencer and borla mufflers, went over to a high flow converter in place of the silencer and it was the best thing I ever did

Mine was so so clogged up you couldn't see through it.
I removed it after getting my car inspected and will have to reinstall it again for the next 3 inspections, until I am exempt. I didn't want to buy a new cat, or god forbid my 20yrs old cat give up ghost so i took it off to save it just to pass for the next 3 years. After that I go classic status and don't have to do emmissions inspections!

I'm getting ready to test for my 6th time on my aftermarket high flow cat.
