Elnots seems to know what he's doing and can probably distinguish the good replies from the bad one. So I'll just say this:
Most everything except the motor is the same on the rx-7. The motor itself has little to worry about except the seals (no timing belt, cams, etc., etc.). The motor is extremely sensitive to detonation, overheating and oil changes, but otherwise quite durable. The N/A runs quite rich, so detonation is not a concern. But higher octane is often recommended on turbos as a safety net. Oh, and cheap synthetic oils cause problems in rotary engines because they shrink seals and leave deposits. Some people will not even use the good synthetics, but most have found them to be just fine.
Other non-engine related quirks to look into include the 3800rpm hesitation (okay this is engine related, but the fix isn't), rear-wheel steering (~$300 to fix, ~$80 to disable), underbody sensitivity to rust, an electrical problem that could destroy aluminum radiators and electrical issues on the dash instruments. There are probably more I forgot; most are covered in the FAQs.
Gas: The good ones with the best deposit control, etc. are Chevron, 76 and Shell. Octane doesn't affect deposits, only detonation. See www.toptiergas.com for details (endorsed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota).

I've thrown on rtek 1.7 with the 720cc's, check my vbgarage to see all the details. But it's freakin quick. I love it to death. I've never been so in love with a car as I've been with this one.
Fiance's excluded. . . They take number 1!!! Love you baby!

mine has also sat for years. I'm waving goodbye to the idea of restoring the factory systems and going with a Racing Beat holley conversion and exhaust and distributor ignition (a la '81-'85). I'm rebuilding an engine with the Bruce T. video.

Seriously I work at a coffee shop, and consider myself mostly poor. It hasn't been easy by any means. And other than a few small things like window tint, shifter kit, and miscellaneous repairs; the car is complete.
Thanks everyone for your support over the time it took to do all this!

Yeah I'm only 16, what i'm going to do is get a driect deposit with a job this summer and have my mom take the debit card from me, and I don't have to worry about rent, if I pull long hours i'll make a little less than $1000 (with minimum wage 8 hour days 4 days a week) by the end of summer and my mom says she'll match what I make, then I'm buying a rebuild kit ($1300) a wiring harness ($400) misc. parts like rusted bolts and such ($200) and people on protege forums have agreed to do free labor for me. So that should work out, I'm going to work just that much harder knowing what you've been through.

Man, you are 16 and you will only be working 32 hours a week? What else you got going? If I were you I would be getting a couple part time jobs for the summer, maybe three, bust you tail and make some bank...I made almost $10k in one summer working 3 jobs (when I was in high school), yeah it killed the summer, but my car was freaking bad *** for the up coming school year.
Hard work, long hours, and you can have yer 7 looking and running great too! Try you won't be disappointed...
