I'd like to hear anyone's ideas on the running ultra-rich also. I just picked up a '90 GXL and it's really rich... like makes your eyes water in seconds rich.

for the lock just spray a bit of wd in it. if it still sticks try again. if that doesn't work take the door apart, remove it and soak it for a day or two. if that dosen't work, replace it.
I would do the ATF thing. get one of those oil cans with the little trigger to pump it through the attached flexible hose on it. fill it will auto tranny fluid. squirt three pumps in one of the spark plug hole on each of the rotors. trurn the motor so an apex seal passes the hole and repeat. note the two rotors are not aligned the same. so the apex seal will pass at a different time on the front rotor compared to the rear. note #2 there are three faces on each rotor.
After you are sure you have atf in each chamber. let it sit for at least 24 hours. two days it better. then after you wait, you start it and watch the smoke for about an hour. It's really cool.
I do this about once a year. the detergent in the atf desovles the carbon build up on the seals so the seat better.
the first time i did this I was amased at the new found power from properly moving apex seals. I had more power and better fuel economy.
Check ebay for parts. you can find some great deals.
On the running too rich.. replace your water temp sensor and the air intake sensor I had this trouble and that fixed after too much money spent elsewhere.
Don't listen to the guys that say not to run synthetic oil. it rocks. they listen only to the lies form the oil companies. it is better in every way, hands down. besure to put Mobile 1 in the tranny and the diff. Accually since you don't know the history of the car, replace those fluids with cheap lube with some detergent. drive it for a couple of days then drain it out and either repeat (me) or thrown inthe mobile1. The Mobile 1 oil filters are great too. My oil always looks like it's new when I change my oil.
clean all of your grounds very well in the engein bay and at the cpu. If you haven't changed the alternator yet, get one from an 89+ they have a higher amperage output. the 93+ is better still but much more expensive and harder to adapt.
look up how to set your throttle position sensor.
replace the stock fan with and electric fan and a thermostat to turn it on.
there is a fuel line in the stupidest place, under the intake manifold on top of the motor. you have to remove your upper intake to replace it. do it. it will leak soon.
I personally like the stock alarm. it arms when you lock the doors and disarms when you unlock them.
make sure your aux port are working. they are one the passenger side of the block in the lower intake. push the actuators to see if they move freely. if they don't you can start you car and stick a vac line from the intake into a bottle of atf. let it suck some in and shut off the motor. have your girl work the key for you. you might want to do this just before you do the above mentioned atf trick. that way you only need to wait once. Now do they actually open when they are supposed to is another matter. 3800 RPM using back pressure from the split air pipe on the cat is what does it.
make sure your metering oil pump works! get a manual!

I can't think of anything else right now. welcome to the club. These cars a women. if you don't treat them well, they will make your life miserable.

Congrats on your new 7!

Oh... Isn't the GTU the same as a turbo II other than the fact that it doesnt have a turbo? I did a research paper on RX-7's and thats what I read. So it should have all the goodies that came with the TII I believe (except the turbo =P).

Well, you were right about the pulsation dampner...

So now my car's a big heap of burnt metal...

Just kidding, we found the fuel leaking onto the block, read up on it, found out. OHHH!! So that's a pulsation dampner. And then proceeded to strip the engine of the problem, only to be replaced... with a small peice of crap that costs 250 from the dealer, and 140 from a Mazda store!!!???

Jesus, talk about inflation!!

Other than that, everything else is dandy, except the whole exhaust system is a pile of rust and the catalytic converter is..... I'll post a picture cause you gotta see it to believe it.

I just want to say congrats to you and I respect what you're doing. You don't have a half a clue of what does what under the hood of a 7, but you're jumping in headfirst. Props to ya on the enthusiasm.

Some suggestions from one new car owner to another:

1) Get a Hayne's Manual
2) Download the FSM (Factory Service Manual) and read it, hell even print the whole thing ( http://www.iluvmyrx7.com ) .
3) Keep up the enthusiasm. I wish I had a friend to work on my car with.

It's been long time since my last post.

We sold the RX to a friend a year ago, stupidly thinking my 96 Probe GT would be a better project. But we bought it back Dec 23rd. In between ownership the car sat almost entirely unused.

Since we've had it back we replaced the clogged cats, which uncovered the massive richness in the fuel.

more later

Anyway, someone tell me if these syptoms sound familiar. But I don't have the time to work on my car at length due to the fact that I work all the time now (Which leaves me with money to pay others to do it lol). So instead of taking my car to a cheap independent shop, where god only knows if the technician has seen a rotary in ten years. I took my baby to a Mazda dealership to have a master tech look into it.

Apparently a mixture screw had been set all the way to full rich, and several other mechanical items had been misaligned. (Probably from before or during the junk yard stay, but also probably from all of our amateur rotary mechanic skills)

Resestting everything to oem specs, they turned it on, only to have my poor RX belch smoke "like a bad cheech and chong movie" to quote the service advisor! They said my service was free of charge, them thinking I would blame them for screwing up my car and having a smoke factory to drive from then on.

Well I got in. Turned it on, drove away, and after 2 minutes it never smoked again. *That's the part where no one has an explanation* It gets alot better gas mileage but the low compression is very noticeable now.

I don't know if I ever mentioned it before, I'll go read my previous posts, but we had a total loss of compression a year ago before we sold the car, an old RX-7 tech saw us and showed me that automatic transmission fluid in one of the vacuum ports on the intake manifold causes the apex seals to swell, reviving lost compression. How safe is that to do repeatedlty?

Anyhoo, more updates soon, as well as new pictures! The car got it's window's tinted today, a system installed last week, and soon a new coat of paint!

hope these links work. Don't ask about the autometer, it's a long story.
Car's still looking good! And not only that, but I just got ahold of a Turbo motor + attached tranny.

I need some info, I'm going to need the new ECU, but also Tii wiring harness & gauge cluster, right? Anything else I shouldn't forget? Probably the air filter assembly? I dunno.

*edit* Also, I replaced the stereo, but the dash being so old and dry rotted collapsed under the new weight and so now I need a new dash lol!

*bump*

So no one knows what all I'd need besides wiring harness, ECU, and gauge cluster for my RX7 engine swap? Putting in a crate turbo motor w/ intercooler & turbo & tranny attached. And will the turbo manifold bolt up to the GTU exhaust pipe?

Also is there any sort of advantage of a tranny off a Tii over a tranny off a GTU?

Thanks again!

A search should reveal all the info you need... tons of people have done the swap you're about to do.
It's good to hear you're keeping the car alive.

Simply Sexy Racing is still around, I'll tell her to post something. That's my fiance hehe.

Anyhoo, I must have posted my query in the wrong topic, and they deleted it, but maybe you guys can lend some insight.

I just bought this motor off ebay.. It was a repost from a no bid auction. No one bid this time and 985$ for a 40-50,000 mile Fc3S motor is one sweet deal. But I think something has to be fishy if no one bid, twice, ,and it's so cheap... Anyone see any reason why they wouldn't bid on it if they had the funds? Thanks a bunch!

I just discovered the wonderful FAQ section, my apologies for being newbish on that one. I just got back from Dallas with my new Tii hood. It's ULTRA sexy! I'll post pics soon!

Plus I took a hacksaw to part of the front bumper and it's pretty hot looking. You'll have to see for yourselves, muahaha!

A little paint and body work and it'll look better than new, Aluminum or Steel hood?, get that jspec turbo engine installed yet? Woulda left the bumper alone though IMO

I lucked out once again, when I bought the hood I didn't know what to look for. but reading FAQ's I saw the rivets thing. Yep, it's aluminum! And only cost me $225. Except for paint chipping on the front of it, plus a small ding, it's in perfect shape!

The jspec motor should be in by Friday, they told me they shipped it this morning. I just won another ebay auction for a S4 Turbo ECU for $71 also alleged to be in good shape. I still need the intake duct/wiring harness. Those things are pretty damn hard to find.

*edit* And what's wrong with my bumper?
If you're refering to the more-so R34 look I gave it, I think it's sexy! If you're refering to what use to be the aero package on my front end, it was so rotted away when I got the car that I had to take off most of it. Sad day indeed.

I am now the proud owner of an RX-7 GTU-T. I spent 19 straight hours sunday with the best rotary technician I've ever met swapping the old 13B with a jspec 13BT sans emissions equipment. These are some pics from a camera phone so not good quality, but after we finish tuning it and reroute the boost gauge I'll get some better shots that are detailed in a few days.

Man this car has come a long way since I first got it.

okay well apparently this whole thread is under the definition of a blog, so I guess I'll "blog" the next big thing!

My car is currently at Maaco getting a hell of a make over. It had to spend 4 days in the body shop alone getting dents pulled, rust removed, and fenders replaced. But it's about to be painted Silver Iceberg Metallic.

They will be matching the body trim and the tail light bezel to the vehicle paint code. The rear emblems will be painted flat black as well as the side view mirrors. And to add icing to the cake, thanks to corksport, my Lazari will be rebadged as a GT-R.

Just a forewarning to keep your eyes open because come either Saturday or Monday I'll be back here showing off my pride and joy!
