1987 rx7

Ok so basically this dude just gave me this rx7-which has been one of my dream cars to fix up for a long time...

basically i need to rebuild the engine..its a 13b straight..no turbo...
i forget exactly what he said is wrong with it..but he said theres 2 possible things that can be wrong.and either one i have to rebuild the motor...

any suggestions would be great...
like if its possible to rebuild as a 13b turbo?

Its possible. You will need to get 4-port housings though, well you don't have to but its easier. Tii intake, a bunch of little stuff.

welcome to the forum! Yes it's very possible to do, but there's more to it than just rebuilding it as a turbo, then throwing it in and calling it a day. You need to do some research on turbo swapping before you get to far into the project without realizing all the costs. Here's a good link on that, and there is some great information in the FAQ's over this as well.

Read the FSM, search the forum, read often and post sparsely.

There are lists of rotary shops in the local areas of the forum, or you can check out rotaryresurrection's writeup and atkin's rebuild video and take a crack at it yourself.

Good luck/skill- learn about the wankel and delve into the mystery of the magic triangles

well i would suggest doing it yourself...but its one of those things that you either already do, or if you try and like it, its going to change your life.

Well you'd be learning real quick if you decided to turbo swap it. You'd need a turbo ECU, turbo wiring harness, turbo boost sensor, turbo AFM, turbo exhaust and intake manifolds, turbo throttle body, a turbo hood (unless you went with a FMIC.), I'd recommend a turbo transmission, and with that you need a turbo driveshaft, I'd also recommend a turbo differential..... hmmm, what else..... for the rebuild you'd need turbo rotors (unless you decide to keep the high compression N/A rotors), an IC system (stock or FMIC, your choice), TID, fuel injectors, yada yada yada......

well its not only a turbo swap though..
the mechanic told me its probably the apex seal..and that the previous owner ruined the motor...
he said it'd be around 2800 to rebuild the motor...
and then i could probably do a turbo swap myself i believe...
suggestions?

I see... then chat up the local section at the bottom of the home page and see where your local rotary shops are.

Rebuilding a rotary isn't supposed to be hard, but it is time consuming and you need a nice clean dedicated garage. Browse these forums a bit, they'll be a great help for other problems after you get the motor fixed. Or for info on converting the motor to turbo, if this is even possible (without costing more than buying a blown turbo motor and rebuilding that).

ya i was possibly thinking about buying a turbo and rebuilding that instead..

the guy at the shop told me it'd be about an extra 800 to rebuild my current 13b as a turbo...so around 3500...worth it?

hell no! You can get a blown 13bt around somewhere for less than a grand, then rebuild it for cheap...... total cost somewhere around 2000 - 2500 bucks
