hey jackchild can you take pics of under the top mount so i can see how you routed all of your wiring? i just got the countour alt this weekend and i went to the junk yard and grabbed as most of the harness i i could (all the plugs until the all lead to a single green wire?)

alsoi know you said you swapped the rear section of the alt to make it easier to wire in also but i am not lucky enough to have a taurus alt to do the swap. is there a diagram that would let me wire in the contour alt?

The wiring is exactly the same as the other ford alternators listed in the diagrams. S wire goes jumpered to stator terminal, A wire gets new wire run via fuse able link to the battery, and the I wire goes to switched ignition. I could be mistaken as this is just from memory.

The reason jackchild59 swapped the back regulator was because he didn't have the correct plug. If you live near a pick and pull you should be and be to locate many contour 2.0's that you can snag the plug off of.

i hoped it would be something simple like that but with Jack saying the voltage regulator was part of the plug i just wanted to be sure. i snatched the plug off of a 96 contour and it all seems to join together to a single green wire. i will take pics and post them later tonight of the contour plug.

do you have any pics of how you wired up your contour alt djSL? im looking for ideas on how to run the wiring in the bay so its not in the way of anything

edit*i also took the 175 amp stock fuse that is connected to the contour alt and took the battery to starter wire from a crown vic to use as my jumper from the alt to the battery. fuse is not one im familiar with since it is all black and no viewing window to see if its blown. will the 175 amp fuse be ok with the set up?

The alternator and plug may differ per engine type. Was the 96 contour a 2.0? I can take pictures of my plug I got from the junk yard as it fit my alternator perfectly. I don't have the alternator on yet as I'm waiting for my car to get back from the tuner. Please keep in mind, the wiring I provided is for an s4.

The I wire goes to the alt gauge.

Would the FD dual pulley be too big? I have good charging voltage at idle and with rpm, but turn on the lights and I loose my charging voltage

Tell me how you have the altenrator and car wired:

Label on the Taurus alt wire connector and where each one goes to on the car.

I figured it out tonight. My black white wire has a voltage drop in it somewhere causing the regulator to not see 12v. Ran a wire to the battery directly for verification and the alternator now charges like a champ

That's good info. What kinda of voltage drop-how many volts? How did it affect your charging?

Where did you end up connecting the 'I' wire? did you go with a switched 12v source?

Details!

thanks!

Jack

BTW-
I picked up 3 clean OEM Contour plugs at the picknpull today. I am using one of them. If anyone needs an oem plug to fit this alternator, please PM me. These plugs are 25-35 bux on the interweb. I'll send you one for the shipping.

Jack, where is the pick n pull? I always hear about it, but have no idea where it is!

I also heard there is a junk yard where you pay $15 and you can walk out with whatever you can carry with 2 hands. I also don't know where that is.

Instead of 12v it was only seeing 9 volts. Something screwy in the factory wiring. Haven't took the time to find the issue. In the mean time, I've ran a wire from a dead spot in my cabin fuse box to the alternator and it works like a charm. Just having issues with keeping a belt on it with all loads turned on. It will burn a belt in 2 in less then 5 miles of driving. Thats with lights, radiator fan running and blower motor running. Take out the lights or the radiator fan and all is well. I'll extend the bracket this weekend and put 2 decent sized belts on it to try and keep from burning belts off.

As an update. I got this installed and my volts are PERFECT now. Sitting right around 14. As I didn't have an air pump bracket to hack up, I just chopped off a bunch of the stock alternator bracket and flipped it around. It works perfectly.

Mocking it up. I did put a washer on the back to space out the bracket and line it up with the alternator.

Better picture

All mounted up, new water pump to boot!

Great work jack, I will be using all that I learned by reading this and installing contour alts on both of my 7's beacause I also the taurus fan and it puts a big load on the system as previously discussed. Are you running your fan on just low speed, or is it hooked up to the high speed? Thanks in advance. You may have covered that but I can't remember.

^As a heads up rotorhead izzy, make sure to verify with the alternator seller as to what frame you're receiving. I ordered the exact same alternator from the same ebay seller and received a different casing. While this worked, I had to cut the alternator casing to make it work as pictured above. I'd request a picture of the actual item received.

thanks for the heads up djsl. I plan on running this with my gilmer set up, so if i have to trim the casting i will. but i'd rather have the proper casting. i may run to the local pick and pull and grab one just so i know that i have the right casting just in case the one i order doesn't.

On my 90 Vert I have a Mighty Mark VIII Lincoln two speed fan. Low runs for temp temp, high comes on for a/c conpressor activation.

just swapped on one of the contour alts. So far it works great. One issue i had was the factory L wire on s5 plug wasn't getting 12v. so i ran a new wire to a switched 12v source. Here are some pictures with my Gilmer drive.
