10AE Turbo Replacement?
10AE Turbo Replacement?
Hi all,
So there's a chance that after a rebuild w/ street port we noticed the car letting off white smoke during every start-up. We're assuming the engine was rebuilt correctly and there's something else wrong with it given the car's history.
If we wanted to replace the stock turbo on the 10AE, what are some good cheap alternatives? We'd be 100% ok finding a used turbo, but wondering if we should just stick to an S4 turbo or if there are... Better things out there.
Car has stock size injectors, stock IC and intake with a catless downpipe.

out of curiosity, is there a reason rebuilding the original/current turbo is not an option?
to your actual post, it really depends on what you want to do. if you're keeping the car stock (injectors, intercooler, etc.), then it might make the most sense to keep a "stock" turbo.
certainly, there are better things out there, but it's sort of a rabbit hole. you probably need to draw a hard line of how far you're willing to go, then choose accordingly.

@diabolical1 I was thinking maybe it would be more cost-effective to buy a used one instead of rebuilding the stock one. Nothing against it, but with the amount of money spent on the engine just now, maybe I want to go cheap until we're ready to ugprade. I see a few kits here and there for $70-$150, but no way in hell I'm trying to rebuild it myself. You happen to know a reputable company/person I can ship it to?

I know of a place in Ontario that does turbo rebuilds generally sub $1000.
Honestly journal bearing turbos are pretty easy to DIY rebuild - they're very simple.
Absolutely port the snot out of the wastegate regardless of what route you take - even with a heavy ported wastegate they boost creep badly with any decent flowing exhaust. And it's "free" horsepower.

Call up BNR Supercars. Maybe they can still do stock rebuilds. The BNR bolt on turbos were the common mod back in the day.

Thanks guys. If the BNR "upgrade" costs less than $1k and it gets ported, that might make more sense to us. I might try to find some videos on rebuilding these turbos, but running a catless exhaust and knowing now of the horrible boost creep we might want to be more careful and port it.
