[AUS] may be buying a ragtop 87 Turbo for 4k, Should I?
So I'm new here but not to forums, been looking at this rx7 2nd gen 1987 Supposedly 116xxx kms in my city and he only wants $4,000! the motor is awesome and have read a fair bit of tech and no smoke, no oil anywhere, boosts smoothly etc etc Im from Victoria which is in Australia BTW and the ''redbook'' value on these cars is from 5.5-7.5
..... the bad, the car was owned by, um, how do i say ''wog'' without offending anyone? anyway painted interior pieces, some of the B/kit is held on by screws, cracks, chips etc etc so the way this thing drives is amazing i drive a FTO as my daily and they make 200hp from a 2l NA V6 that weighs less but this rx7 i drove is nice and twitchy and more torquey.
I would only be buying this car as a toy as its a 2 seater convertible so it has to be a good by to make me pay 2 sets of registration and get this thing up to scratch. we have to get our cars ''roadworthy'' here which means i would have to raise it maybe, take it to a mechanic that dosent care that it has a dual 3'' zorst with cannons and maybe no cat which i know id have to put 1 on but apart from that its good and the guy has burned $2500 fixing stuff to get it on the road.
mods are a manual Boost controller i would have to hide (because of laws) BOV but it has the factory 1 that comes with it, the wheels look old and ***** so id have to change em. sure theres more but ask me and ill tell you.
ooh its a 5spd manual too and like everything ''drivewise'' the clutch feels great, air con is there but disconnected too which is odd so should i buy it or am i buying a Project??? if i could get it on the road and just burn around in it for 1-2 years then get most of the money back id be happy with that
Thanks and thought?

A thing to realize is by this point, almost every FC is a project car. Another point is you will NEVER get back what you put into it. Unless you have a buyer with more money than brains.

Most of us actually like these cars... We don't buy them to "burn around in" for one or two years and then sell them. We keep them, learn about them, and completely enjoy them... Even when they're on jackstands.
Do as you please, though. Do you have any pictures of the car? Can you offer the guy $3,500 and see where it goes from there??

You'll definitely find the support on this forum that you may need in order to get things working on this car but just as anybody else will tell you, it will most likely be a bit of a project so be aware of that - but well worth the effort as they're a blast to drive. Good luck

Your $4000 is different than our $4000.
Are FC's available by you normally?
Good thing it's a project car...
I would point out EVERYTHING wrong with it and ask him "am I paying extra for that?". Get the price down. The lower the price goes, the easier it is to buy. You are going to spend a lot of money on it as it is, might as well start from the bottom.

there's only 1 picture of the car and it makes the car look better then it is, i think its a bomex front bar and the side skirts are really chunky and squareish. the front fenders are heaps different they look like widebody ones, you could rest a mug of coffee ontop of them but thats 1 of the many things that not so good he has obviously had big rims on at one stage and put a 10-12cm split across it and just put a couple of screws in it and painted it with cheap spray paint, getting back to the point made eariler, about the previous owner doing dodgy repairs.
front bar is cracked too but is fibreglass and car is a bit low to pass roadworthy, here it has to be 10cms high at lowest point fully laden which means 2 people in the car. as stated yes our $4,000 is very different to your especially in terms of what we can buy even though our dollar is stronger then yours $1US= $1.05 AUS cars here are all a rip off thanks to the government/taxes and even more so for imports as they tax the crap out of them. we get japenese people to cut cars in half to send over here so they dont pay the ''import taxes'' of a full car.
i wouldent thrash it if i got it but i would give it a good work out fairly frequently also doing all the must do's when owning a rotary.
Click this link to see what $12,500 gets you in aus..... a non turbo 88 rx7 (to be fair this 1 wont sell for that) http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...:Min,15000~0.5
also this guy is a friend of a friend and he already knows that the car is in bad shape and thats why its cheap but im not sure its cheap enough for how bad it is.....
