Single Msd Two step *write up*
Single Msd Two step *write up*
Ok so it took me a while an a lot of research. I found a few things around here through one of my buddies in town with a fd. The ones i found used two relays witch i found to be a waste if you just cut the main power to the coil using one relay. What i wanted to do was put a msd on an use a two step for the track. The draw back to this was if you only have one box you are limited cause the trailing stay on even with the rev limit or two step is active. So i had to find a way around this. Also this is a way to get around it if you do not have a ecu/ stand alone that does this on its own
What i found was that if you cut the power to the trailing coil an hit the two step the leading coil will do what you want it to do.
So this is what you will need
One 5 pin closed bosch relay from autozone checkers advanced auto napa so on
Extra trailing coil two wire plugs ill explain later
Msd 6a,6al,sci. so on
Msd two step 8739
MSd module pills.
10mm wrench
wire cutters
butt splices
14 gauge wire or what you like
on off switch or push button
The goods about doing this i have found is on your launch you build more boost an faster 60ft times. Also another way to scare ricers in honda's hahahaha.
The bads about it when your two step is engaged the stock tach will stop working till the button/switch is released. Why because the stock tach is ran off the trailing coil. This didnt bother me to much as that I have a Autometer tach ran to the leading coil off msd. Now i have not had the chance to do this as i live in colorado an we are having a 3day snow storm. So tomorrow i will try to get this in an take pics an video.
So first this is what i did i ran the msd the way i found on fc3spro.org heres the link.

Doing this will get you to the stage I am explaining.
Ok so what you wanna do is first take your trailin coil out. Its 4 10mm nuts that hold it down. Onces its out theres a two wire an a four wire plug unplug them. I just take the whole coil out as it makes it easier to work. Heres were the extra trailing two wire plugs come in. What i do is just go to the junk yard an cut the plug off the trailing coil and harness. This way all you have to do is plug them in insted of cutting your stock harness. this pic is off the leading so the other wire not the black wire might be a differnt color

Take the plugs you got from the junk yard an take the other wire not the black(positive) wire an connect it to the other side off the cut plug with a butt splice. Take one side of the black wire, wire it to 87a the other side to 30 on the relay.

Now after you got this good and hidden. Your going to wanna run a wire from a 12v switched. I just took mine from a empty slot in my fuse box that is only on with the key. So take this wire an run it to a switch or push button for your two step. Now the other side of the switch is kinda tricky. Your going to wanna take two wires an twist them to one. Connect a spade connector on an plug this to the switch/button. One wire will go to the red wire on the two step box PN8739. The other wire will go to the relay 85. it will look like this. Both wires will run out threw the fire wall.

in the pic it says either wire on the coil just use the black power wire.
Ok so last your going to wanna ground 86 make this a good clean connection. 87 is now used as once you put 12v to 86 with the button it will open to 87 an shut the coil off. So what i do it wrap electrical tape around the wires so they dont ground out. so plug the coil into the junk yard wires that you connected to the relay an try to hide it. Put you coil in dont bolt it in. just put it on the studs start the car an test this before bolting the coil back on. This should work fine I will keep you posted an let you know if i run into anything that i find doesnt work. I know this does work as there is another post for it in the 3rd gen section. Mine is just how i found it would work on a second gen

thanks man i tryed to be clear as possible. I missed a few things on there like how to put the two step to the msd but I think most people know how that goes sence the diagram is in the box. But im goin to get mine in today ill take some pics an videos
well i got it in an going today. Im having a little problem which i have had this problem before were my trailing coil will just randomly shut off. So i think my ignitior might be going bad. but it does work i was getting ready to take a video an my phone was dead hahaha. but i dont know if its cause my button im using is getting stuck but i dont think it is. cause i rev it an it will hit 4 rev cause im in break in. But with the switch i have mine set to 3200. ill get you a video either tomorrow or tonight depending how late it gets here in colorado. also i will get my coil crap working again. ill post some pics when i get back from eating..
but for nick with my pills i am only getting like 2 to 3 psi at 3200 floored. it makes loud pops lol

ok so i just got home from work i got a few crappy in car videos my friend has a camera so ill get one asap. I still need to figure out what is going on with my trailing coil not coming back on. I think it might be my switch if not i have to figure some stuff out another way to wire the relay. I might try leaving that plug in insted of jumping it, an using two relays. one of each coil ill keep everyone posted.
OK so i think i have this figured out. By doing it this way it doesn't cut the power to the ignitior only the coils themself. so this is how i figured to do it. Insted of running the jumper wire like i showed. I would use the positives on the trailing not the negitive, cause im not very big with having a positive activated relay coil triggering a negitive wire. But i could be wrong. So anyway this is what am going to to. This way would leave power to the ignintor insted of cutting all power.
So you would have to buy another relay. Part number for auto zone it 19273 advanced itr3177. but anyway take the two relays wire them like i did in the first pic. but Use the wire that goes to the coil itself under the t1 an t2 cap. There labled - and + unbolt the + an cut the wire so you can run it to the relay 30. Then the other side off the relay 87a would go to the stock stud on the positive side of the coil. You will have to do this twice one for each coil it would look like this
ill take pics tomorrow of what it will look like so its more clear

Man, after all that, it seems easier/cheaper to just buy a used bee racing limiter....
I'm not knocking this by any means. It just seems like a huge pita vs splicing into 4 pins on your ecu.
