Post Some Pics of your FC! :D <- Pics of your car go in this thread!!
Hey scrapp what's your camera set up? Looking to take some good pics, need some technical help. I have a Nikon 5100 with stock lenses. I know they're ok, not the best but usable. My questions are more to do with settings pre snap. Do you have any lighting set up or just stock flash?

I just have an old canon T2i. I keep blowing all my money on the rx7 (and shitbox daily) or I would get off my butt and finally find a used 5D.
I have two main lenses, a 30mm prime (no zoom) and a 85mm prime. (Also have some other lenses, but not nice enough to mention.) Some older pics I took of the car at night in my driveway on my flickr are using the 30.. the MOST recent pic I posted was the 85.
Nice thing about primes is the LOW aperture. the 30 goes to 1.4, the 85, 1.8. (Thats what creates the "blur" behind focused objects that people like so much.) I LOVEEEEE dropping my aperture as low as possible, but sometimes that makes for bad automotive photography because the back of the car will be out of focused... (2.0-2.8, sometimes 3.5, are PERFECT numbers for automotive photography... But remember, 3.5 on a prime is NIGHT AND DAY to 3.5 on a kit lens. just better quality.)
Getting good lenses (And a circular polarizer filter) is the SINGLE most thing that can affect your photography.
As for lighting, I have 3 off-camera hotshoe flashes. I also have 4 remote triggers (3 flashes,1 camera) and I have a few light stands/umbrellas.
I really enjoy natural light with a pop from an off-camera flash to fill in shadows... Its a bit hard to explain how to properly light something..
Go find a used 85mm prime, and a circular polorizer filter. Just starting with that will make TREMENDOUS improvements in anything you are trying to do. (I say 85 because it compresses the car and makes it look better... Just have to stand farther back.)
If you have interests in getting better, try to stay simple and take the first step I mentioned. After that I can move you into other ideas if you want.
EDIT: I went back over your question to make sure I covered it all... as for "pre snap settings" yes, thats how it starts... For me, I just like to first set my aperture (LOW AZ PURSIBLESS!!!), then I study how bright the light is and set the ISO next (100s for bright, higher for darker) THEN I set my shutter speed, and I as a "photographer" I properly count off stops and such, but basically, get the needle in the middle to START off with.... For Canons, I like to shoot about a stop higher/brighter (Thats 3 wheel clicks) and then bring any brightness down in photoshop. Nikons tend to be better suited to shoot DARKER, and BRING UP in photoshop... (Canon has too much noise if shot dark, and Nikons sometimes cant handle being shot too bright.)
All in all, for my style, I like to shoot a "little" over exposed, and then edit in photoshop... I feel it create a better "lighter whispy" look...
It's a wip, and before i get **** for rolled and pulled fenders, I'm getting coils sometime this month and needed them rolled before hand.

No one is going a give you **** about you not being rolled and pulled. Unless that's what you're going for and you're doing it wrong. Lol
Looks great so far. Really tuff. I'm interested to see how it turns out.
