CA Goodbye Eardrums

By the end of next week i will begin working on a new exhaust system for my 1991 S5 N/A. Plans are:
Racing Beat Header 2into1 (heat wrapped), Bonez High Flow Cat with welded mid pipe (partially heat wrapped), then single 3" extension pipe to passenger side exit w/o a muffler.

guess this means i'll be needing to carry ear plugs with me now, but you gohtta admit its probably gohna sound amazing. if you have a similar setup or have past expierience with a non muffler exhaust, feel free to leave some posts. haters welcome

That's all nice and dandy, but you should know better specially in California. In other words, don't be surprised to be pulled over by the police quite frequently. Otherwise, good stuff.

never heard one with a cat and not a muffler....i bought a 87 n/a once that had just a complete straight from the header back to a little 2" chrome tip and it sounded like ****...and was really really loud..but the cat should mellow it out a bit

You will be getting pulled over. I'm running Corksport header and race-pipe w/:Apexi dual cat-back and its loud as ***. Honestly its too damn loud, in fact I just ordered up some silencers for the n1's. Goodluck with that.

@RCFC: right now i have dual exhausts too w/o silencers with 2.75" piping and they're pretty loud as well. i think if anything having two canisters instead of one makes it louder. its more give and take.

Maybe since your running a cat it will muffle it some. I'm not running a cat just a race-pipe so that's why mine is extra loud. But a cat with no mufflers might have the same result. You'll just have to wait and see. Goodluck

If it's a street vehicle why not run a muffler, being to loud will just bring on unwanted attention. I hate how loud my car is! LOUD does not mean FAST, but FAST can be LOUD.

at this point its still an idea. i'm debating between running a 3" extension pipe from the cat on out, or running a 2.5" in and out magnaflow 'mini me' with with the 2.5" cat exit going into the muffler and a 3" extension pipe coming out of the muffler. Here's some pictures to sort of create a visual of what im trying to achieve.

heres the magnaflow model muffler i want to use:

and this is a dirtbike muffler extension tube:

im sort of going for that rally car prototype looking exhaust look;p now its just making it fit...

if you run the mini me to a good muffler while keeping the oem header it will be fine, 2.5" is fine no need to go 3" if you are N/A, as far as the racing beat header i use to have it on a long time ago and to be honest save your money cause you wont be able to tell the difference.

what it will sound like straight, and not much better with just a muffler.

@Drifterx: well the racing beat headers them selves im getting for super cheap and im sort of left with no choice also because my current exhaust is welded up front to back. the 3" extension pipe out to the rear would just be for looks;D but its confirmed im gohna use a magnaflow muffler to avoid excessive noise.

I have a Magnaflow 2.5'' in/out round case muff if you need one. It's used but they last forever. had about 10k miles on it. Make me a good offer and I can ship it out your way.

cool, once you take it to the exhaust shop make sure there are no cracks or anything on the system cause that can cause it to leak and that = loud, other then that it should be good for the streets but you still run the risk of cops ******* with you if it looks to modified, so a decent looking muffler would help out in that department.

I have a smiller set up, but I have the apexi evo cat-back. It's kinda loud, but I've gotten used to it and it's not unbearable.

Try a diffuser maybe?
