elford anyone?

ok i was looking thru a book my mom bought me when i was really young. its called convertibles, sun wind and speed. ok well it just gives a rundown of the most famous verts ever made. and in the 85 thru 90 section theres a pic of an rx. it said its an 87 ELFORD. its right hand drive, and and it has euro plates. ok well its black with gold trim, maroon interior, spoiler that kinda falls down along the side of the trunk area. and the weirdest part is on the front, where it usually says MAZDA it says ELFZRD. so has anybody ever heard of it before? just wondering cause ive never seen it or heard of it cept in this book. and even more weird is its not a vert in the pic it has, its got the sunroof but thats it. so any info on this would be nice, id like to learn more about it, and if someone out there has pics of some, please post them. please and thanks

"The Elford designation comes from the dealership in the UK that created and sold all sorts of bits to uprate the 1st gen 7. By far the most significant of these was the elford turbo.

I think the dealership was owned by Vic Elford who had a fairly big racing career at the time"

"Back when these cars were new, they weren't considered that quick as they fell off the production line. So Elford - who had raced a Mazda rotary at Le Mans with quite some success - removed all the emissions gear, original inlet manifold and carb and replaced it with a cast alloy manifold to which he bolted a Garret T3 turbo, which sucks the mixture through via a 1.75" SU carb. All very low tech and running on a fairly mild boost. Surprisingly enough, this setup works very well, producing about 15-20 bhp more than the original Mazda Turbo setup which wasn't available in the UK anyway.

In its original form, these cars were pumping out between 165 and 170 bhp; This car is mostly original apart from the exhaust and should be good for 175+ BHP as it stands. Interestingly enough, neither the suspension nor the brakes were considered worthy of an upgrade... "

some more random stuff i found
