Hello. I'm new to the forum but not to RX7s - I've owned my '87 Turbo since new.
I recently had a flooding situation in my garage and since then the car hasn't been able to start. With the key in the accessory position there is an audible, fast clicking coming from somewhere seemingly in the engine compartment. My first thought was that it was the starter solenoid having been shorted by the flood. I removed and tested the starter - it works when jumped. With the starter still out of the car, battery reconnected and key returned to the accessory position the clicking is still present. If I am reading the wiring diagram correctly, there is a solenoid in the "starter cut relay" - can this be the source of the clicking and if so, where is this device located? Or could it be something else?
Well, it took me a while to get back to this headache.
It appears that the BAC solenoid is not the problem - the clicking comes from the "Fuel Pump Resistor Relay" - a device mounted underneath the air filter, accessible once the filter unit is removed. It consists of a metal bracket to which 3 items are attached, connected together by wires. It carries the identification "Nippon Denso Set Assy No. 058700-1300" so it appears that it is a package deal, not separate components. I will attempt to attach photos.
I have a Haynes manual which identifies the thing but doesn't give any real information about it; it shows up on the wiring diagram but the diagram doesn't show the same number of wires and the wire colors are different that those in the car. And of course, the diagram is so small that a magnifying glass is required to read it.
I checked an online factory shop manual and it shows generally the same device and ways to test it although the connections do not look like those in the car. And it doesn't identify the attached wires (colors).
It appears that something called a fuel pump relay that will allegedly work for the car can be found online but it is not the entire assembly, only one of the three pieces - and it does look like it matches what the shop manual shows in their section on testing the relay.
Can anyone offer any insight into this thing? Can anyone offer any recommendation as to where I might find a GOOD wiring diagram?
The connector to the intake must be plugged in for the relay to work properly, maybe unplug and contact clean that connection real good to remove any corrosion and there are resistance tests in the fsm for testing the functions with the connector unplugged... make sure it's fully seated when plugged back in ...
Test:
you could try the bypass relay connector (I think green 2 position near passenger shock tower, just short to bypass then turn key on and hear/run fuel pump and see if clicking goes away)
also could be issue with fuel pump or corroded wiring back at fuel pump location as well - good luck !
