problems starting

CA problems starting

hey folks,

sometimes when i turn the key to ignition all i hear is the click of the starter, other times, if i keep trying, the car will crank no problem. at first i thought it was the battery, but the voltage is around 12v when key is out...after starting, the battery is up to 14v...

my main concern really is, what would cause the starter to work sometimes and not work other times? could it be low battery voltage? i dont think that would make sense because I dont need to jump it and if i keep trying, the starter clicks and clicks and eventually cranks and starts up... bad starter maybe?

thanks any words of wisdom is appreciated! btw, I have read the FSM and Haynes for more info already...just trying to get a few more opinions.

Poor connection between the battery terminals and your leads? Try pulling them off and cleaning them.

I had a similar problem a while back... I had a loose connection at the starter.

If your sure the batt is good and cables connected good..............then there is a thread on this forum that addresses your problem. Ain't the starter. Ain't the starter solenoid.

I belive the authors name was HOZZMAN and you might search using that name on the search block on this forum.

Common problem on RX-7 of this series four and five.

I've been down that bunny trail on two of my car. It's a lack of CURRENT going from the key to the starter solenoid that is LACKING because of a connection either in the starter switch........clutch interlock switch.......starter cut relay contacts........or the connector b/t the starter cut relay and the starter solenoid.

thank you, hopefully that is the case and nothing more. I notice the 7 does start without a problem when my battery is hooked up to another cars like in a jump start situation...I can start and restart it without ever hearing the click click click click...so its quite possibly just the whole amps thing

Tell you what. Get a six foot long piece of wire. Crimp a female spade connector on one end.

Remove the trigger wire off the starter solenoid and install that female spade connector on the solenoid in lieu of the trigger wire you just removed.

Now with the car in neutral, touch the other end of this new wire to the positive terminal of the battery.

IF the starter spins each and every time you touch the wire to the battery, that should prove something i.e the lack of current from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid IS the problem like mentioned in my earlier post.
