Oil pan gasket sealant

Hey everyone. Putting my engine back together and I noticed lots of talk around making sure you get a good oil pan seal.

I was planning on making sure the flanges are extremely clean and following the technique in the FSM using a new gasket and this sealant:
https://www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/gasket-sealants/permatex-form-a-gasket-no-2-sealant/

Searching around though, I'm noticing people recommend no gasket and "the right stuff" (mostly 3rd gens though). Should I change my plan?

^I'm with the camp that skips the stock gasket and uses a high quality form-a-gasket type sealant, I've had very good luck with the Permatex "right stuff" as well. Link to specific product I've used: https://www.permatex.com/products/ga...-gasket-maker/

Just make sure both mating surfaces are absolutely clean & dry, pan surfaces are not bent, and make sure you completely circle all the bolt holes and keep your bead size as even & consistent as possible. I think it also helps to let the stuff cure for at least several hours before adding oil to the engine or running it, though the product instructions say you can return it to service "immediately".

Mazda used to sell their own grey sealer. It worked exceptionally well. Have you checked with the dealer to see if its still available?
