First mods?
First mods?
Hey guys I just bought an na fc base, 1886. Aside from good tires what are some good first mods to increase speed/power? Already has coil overs, stage 2 clutch, 12lb fly wheel, and full racing beat header back exhaust. Any ideas?
No porting, I’m keeping the car off the track and I don’t wanna invest in that quiet yet and I may wait until I rebuild(likely years from now) to do that. Motor and clutch have 15k miles

I don't think there is much you can do beside porting to get significantly more power. Maybe start looking for reliability mods, weight reduction, corner balancing...stuff that improve the car's feel and handling. Inspect those old bushings if they haven't been replaced yet, DTSS bushing delete. Replace transmission and diff fluids.
On the more involved side of things, there is a thread on putting a closer gear ratio Miata transmission gear set in the FC N/A transmission, not more power but better acceleration. Also better diff if your's is an open one, Miata's torsen is a drop in for Rx7 N/A diff.

I'll say the first thing you wanna do is always check the engine compression lol. Don't be an idiot like me, did everything, tuned and found the engine needs rebuild.
JK, its an NA, so you wont be able to gain much power unless you touch the engine. Get a set of lightweight wheels will help you gain some speed and handling

First thing I would consider for a power gain is to install a Racing Beat exhaust and ensure your 5th and 6th ports actuators are working properly. Having the tumbler sleeves gummed up can cause them not to open all the way and the engine cannot suck the air in from the dynamic chamber properly. It's a neat system and Mazda stated that it's a "supercharging" effect. I cam tell you that there is huge difference in higher rpm.power if that system is not working properly. Resist the temptation to install a cone filter. The stock intake setup is pretty good and keeps intake air cool and away from exhaust heat fairly well.

About the only thing left would be a standalone ECU with a good tune. Even it you street port it at some point you won't see the full benefit from it on the stock ECU.
