Hey there, i bought an 87 turbo II and am still chasing down all the info i can about it because it has quite a few aftermarket mods. I was wondering of anybody can identify the purpose of these two wires in the picture. they were located behind the coil pack closest to the firewall. Any information would be appreciated
Well I don't think anyone call tell you the purpose of the aftermarket wire without knowing where it's going (maybe at one time used for an aftermarket tach?), but the little black box is what Mazda refers to as a condenser. It's a capacitor used to filter noise on B+ line from the ignition coils.
Thank you for the quick reply, Should the condensor be grounded it never was and just kind of suffed underneath the coil pack?
Yes, I'm sorry I didn't realize it was dangling. Depending on the year/model of the car it could be mounted to a number of different spots, but essentially as long as it's grounded you're all set. Probably ended up dangling after a service over the last 30 years.
The original Mazda location of that condenser is on one of the clutch slave cylinder mounting bolts.
To be slightly more specific than Daniel, it smooths the signal to the oil pressure gauge.

I'm not sure it can be told from the picture which it is, but there is one condenser for the oil pressure sender, and one for the coils. Given the location he described I assumed the one by the coils.
OP, for your reference I've attached the schematics from the FSM, if you're curious.

the one for the coils is on the lover bolt of the bracket for the coils.
the one for the oil pressure circuit is either on the slave cylinder, or on the little access cover right next to the slave cylinder (slave gets changed a lot so these things move)
