86 N/A 4-lug Manual Transmission fill plug

Hello

While I have the car in the air to do some catalytic convertor work for CA emissions, I thought I would try to fix my tranny fill plug issue. . . .I got the car running again after some time sitting and been meaning to get the tranny fluid changed. The guys at oil changers can't do it because they do not have the tool and patience to deal with this. The square head plug, which I assume is 14 millimeter(?), has been rounded off over time. . . .I need a cheap socket or set to handle this square head which I need to find.. . . .And Ideally a replacement plug/bung. . . .Am I gonna have to go to Atkins or some other place to find an OEM replacement plug? . . . ..Anybody know what the internal thread is so when I get this off I can have something from Mcmaster, or anywhere else, that might sell a metric plug of some kind?

I have heard Wonderous Bread say that the tranny feels smoother with synthetic. . . .I plan to use redline MT90 does that sound right? . . 5sp manual 86

Any comments would be good.. . Thanks. . .

I usually just get a really big set of vise-grips and use that on the plug. Works every time. Then just replace with new as J9 suggests

I got under there with some calipers and measured around 14 millimeters. . . .Which comes up as 9/16, 4 point socket, or so I hope as I just ordered it for 12 bucks. I had a hard time finding a 14mm , 4 point socket.

If I can't get that socket to fit, or any socket, I'm gonna do the vise grip option as you suggest. I don't have to drive it right now so I have time to figure it out. . .Thanks ..

I managed to get the plug off no problem. Always pays to check for yourself I guess. . .. .9/16 wrench no problem.

Anyways, while I was down there, i noticed the speedo cable was leaking. . .Does this thing come out without spilling your tranny oil?. . . .Does this thing have an o-ring behind it that I can change to solve the small leakage?

Thanks. . .

Yes, it has an oil seal inside, but it's NLA from Mazda. You should be able to measure the old one and find a generic one with the same dimensions.

You're looking for something like this. I purchased the last one from Mazda, so I regret not measuring it before installation to record the dimensions.

When I purchased mine (the oil seal, I mean) from my local dealer, they told me I was purchasing the last one and that it was no longer in production. Maybe they were mistaken. Atkins shows 900 in stock too, although that might not be the OEM part.

I always thought that was a bit odd though. Why stop providing a generic oil seal? It's not a complicated or Rx7 specific part.

it might have been the last one in the country at the time, which actually happens a lot. sometimes it says its NLA, but they have some, in which case you would get the last one.
there are also plenty of parts which are NLA in the US, but available in Japan. Mazda USA just never seems to learn that in order to make money they need to sell stuff...
