89 intake swap Before/After Dyno Results

I finally found my disk with my dyno runs on them, and here is a overlying jpg of before the swap 89 intake swap and right after. Sorry for the size of the picture, I am at work and have little acess to programs to resize the image.

Mods at the time of dyno included: K&N cone filter, 6port sleeves removed and sealed off, stock exhaust manifold, bonez highflow cat, HKS catback.

The only change between the two was the addition of the complete 89 manifold.

Here is where I stand now, with the addition of RB headers, midpipe, TB mod, electric air pump, no a/c.

I've heard that with porting (ie. street, bridge) the motor will make more power with the old S4 style intake. I wonder if anyone can validate this.

wouold this be advantageous if you have no airpump and the ports are just wired open. would the increases be better than porting the 86 intake?

Very cool, Carl. Want to help me drop a 89 TII intake onto the 88 TII engine that I'm putting in the vert after on? :-)
(I've got JJ's old 89 TII intake at the house.)

Hmm, there would be little down low in ways of torque, and a good bit of power at the top end. The way my car is setup is to take advantage of the VDI for retaining the low end torque but also gaining the high end horsepower.

As for porting the manifold, mazdaspeed7 claims big advantages to it, but he just grinds away at the manifold, I am sure if a flowbench was incorporated into the porting of the manifold, then gains could be seen. Do a search for that and see if anyone shows any results from his porting the manifold.

If the VDI was wired open, then you would loose quite a bit of torque. I also have a dyno run with the VDI shut and with the VDI open. I will see if I can post those.

I noticed more of a gain from porting my manifold than my full true dual exhaust. PP13bnos also ported his manifold, and says the same thing. But I still havent seen a before and after dyno.

I need to get my car on the dyno again. I have a feeling Im going to suprise quite a few people.

How many clicks were on your Series IV motor at the time of the Series V Intake swap? How many presently?

Wozzom suggested to me that his motor may have been tired (many clicks) at the time of the conversion therefore possibly negating the perhaps true effect of the swap of the Intake.

If I remember correctly, about 55K on the Mazda Reman at the time of the swap and about 63k now.

I have just about the same on my rebuilt. On the previous thread https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...threadid=81656

I stated that I wanted to under go this conversion but was worried that I would have dissapointing results. Maybe I will re-evaluate this on my 88 GXL...

Oops, I reall yneed to update my site. I decided not to sell it, I have too much money and time into it. I decided to just finish my ongoing project with it. Its getting a ported motor within a month, new exhaust, custom intake manifold, and in a few months, a custom sc setup with an intercooled Eaton M112. Im not going to give any details on the engine Im building, though. Ill let the dyno speak for itself.

Thanks for the intake article! Next month I will be dropping my street ported '89 engine into my '87. This article will help me use my '89 intake. Thanks :-)

I have been told, and it is my experience, that anything more than a mild SP on a VDI intake will not yeild as much power as an s4 intake with the same port...in other words the stock VDI intake does not react well to porting the engine, changing the flow design of the intake and negating the VDI tuning.

FWIW, i have a spare VDI intake, actually 2, if anybody is interested.

I would have to agree. The runners are just too narrow and too long to flow enough for anything more than a mildly ported engine. A ported manifold will fare better, but I dont know how much. A lot of people dont realize just how much the intake manifold has to do with engine performance in a n/a engine.

mazdaspeed7, you should do a dyno run before the supercharger is on so we can see how much your 7 was making N/A.
