Turbo or Turbos

Hey all 20b's, wassup!!! Nah I am just bored and writing out my whole plan or should I say typing, anyway but what type single turbo should I go with or keep the stock twins, or go with upgraded twins. I have been weighing this back and forth with all the information I have gotten. I want something that can break out some mean hp to the wheels and drop my quarter mile a lot, I mean a lot. But I don't know what to go with. I have seen single turboed 20b's push 400+hp to the wheels, stock twins the same but little less, an upgraded twins off a japanese mag that pushes like almost 700 plus to the wheels-but lets not go into this one because, well lets just say the car doesnt have one stock thing on it, and don't even attempt to race it unless you are outputtin the same power or just have a Skyline Gt-r. Anyways, I also want to know what most of you 20b cars are running, what you pushin to your wheels with your setup. Thanks for who ever replies to help me out, I will probably make a decision here pretty soon and by the setup, right now I just got payed and I have been broke b/c my girlfriend wanted rims, so I went and bought her rims. The price you pay for having one and keeping her dont you think. She better be well appreciated, I would have spent that on my car. But anyways gotsta go. Peace

well.. ive heard one massive turbo is better than 2 because the spool up time is less and you can push more boost.. i might be wrong though...

and there are cars and can hang with a 20b besides a skyline.. not to offend, but sound kind of ricey to own a 20b.. hope you know your ****.. im not trying to flame.. i odnt now.. i guess wrong impressions on the wording.. thats love to buy your girlfriend rims.. thast alot of money..

Save your time and money, and use the stock turbos. If you feel that the extra power is worth the time and money after you get it running, then you can always add a single turbo later. However, note that more power will require very expensive upgrades such as a $5,000-20,000 transmission, $1,000-2,000 clutch/flywheel, $1,000 differential, wide body kit to fit the required wide rear tires and wheels, etc.

Pettit makes 550bhp with the stock turbos at 14.7psig boost and street porting:

Pettit uses the T2 S5 compressor wheel in those "stock turbos" to get that power.

In the September 2000 issue of Sport Compact Car Peter Ferrell did a 3rd gen 20b that did 430 to the wheels on 10lbs of boost. They dyno'd it again with 14psi it did 555bhp at 7000rpm and 448lb-ft of torque at 5500rpm. The way the article read I don't think the 555hp was at the wheels as stated wit the 430hp. He did not elaborate on what single he was using the article just said it was a Turbonetics ball bearing unit.

Do you have a reference for that? No offense, but I think that's an urban legend. My engine builder talked to Cam at great lengths, and this forum is the only place I have heard about this. Besides, I don't see how an S5 turbo would fit very well, although Pettit is quite capable of overcoming any such issues.

There was a PFS black 94 RX-7 3-rotor in Car and Driver. It had a T-70 running between 15psig and 25psig with variable boost control, FD rotor housings, TEC1 EMS, upgraded intercooler, custom driveshaft and subframe, racing clutch, Brembo brakes, Volk Racing wheels, Kumho tires, Koni shocks and other suspension goodies. It made 600bhp @ 7500rpm & 450 lb-ft tq @ 5000rpm on premium unleaded, and more than 700bhp on race fuel. The curb weight was 2930lbs, and the weight distribution was 50.8 / 49.2 % FR. Total cost was $47,000 less original car.

Does Cam himself count? When I thought my stock turbos may be burning oil, I called up Pettit and spoke with Cam. He said that they could rebuild my stock turbos for $1500. I asked him if they had any kind of upgrade to be performed on them. He said that they could do what they did to the Bonzai cars and put the S5 T2 compressor in for $300 more.

Is that good enough proof? If you don't believe me, call and ask him. I spoke with him personally... have you?

The way I understood it, Cam said that they bored out the compressor housing for the twins and put the T2 wheel in there... but just eyeballing the compressors on the stock twins... that doesn't seem like they would fit. I'm sure you could swap the S5 compressor housing and compressor onto the 20B twins, but I'm not gonna do it... right now, I'm thinking of twin 60-1 turbos...

I think rebuilding is definatly the way to go. I was trying to toy with the idea of a pair of t04s or something maybe a little less radical. but bang for buck that sounds like the way to go.

Well, I already have a set of twins... and rebuilding them with the s5 compressors for 550 hp and $1800 doesn't sound like what my goals are....

I'm stuck on what to do... go custom single, or custom twin turbo... actually, I'm going to start a thread on this

I have, and that's what he said. It's a small upgrade for someone who doesn't want to go all the way to a big single.
