Nine 20B Nine

Personal loan is pending.....

..... to buy a 94 Mazda 929 (Pearl white, light tan leather interior, 84k highway miles, blown motor, blown tranny).......$1500.

....and swap a 20B into it. Found a pristine half-cut (with undeployed airbags too!) 1993 JC Cosmo for ~$4grand.

As soon as I can locate a f*cking EMS that will run it, and run it well, then "Project: Nine20BNine" will be underway, and she'll be on the road shortly after that.

You'd never expect to get your doors blown off by a bigass, white, four door, FAMILY CAR!

i think that may be one of the easier cars to put a 20b into, i would bet that the body/subframes are similar

It shouldn't be that hard to find one that will run it. It's more of a decision how much you want to spend on an EMS and deciding on which one will be best for your needs. Some off the top of my head that run a 20B are: wolf3d, 4d, electromotive tecII, tecIII, haltech e6k, e11, motec (not sure of model), microtech (not sure of model) and a lot more.

Not all of them can run it in split trailing mode - but who cares. The only downside to not running is your emissions will be a bit worse, but if you don't get tested where you are then that doesn't matter. You will make more power running them same time also.

As far as I know, from the research that I've done up to this point... the JC Cosmo is just a 2 door version of the 929... similar to the Solara being the 2 door version of the Camry.

If this IS the case... then she should be going in with minimal effort.... key word being SHOULD.

You don't need to run split. the Cosmo ECU runs split only in vacuum for emmissions. and runs i believe 0 split to 10 PSI..

The safe split would be 0 split until boost starts then increase to ~12* by 1 bar.

And since you don't have to worry about emmisions you should be able to run 0 split all the way around. the problem is that it also increases combustion temps, and that can cause high EGTs..

Just get the Cool Tec3 6/12 or whatever it is. .it has individual trims for each plug. and can do split via that on a 20B..

Ok.... I'm sure the question has come up before....

Is there a way to use the stock ECU, with a manual tranny, and trick the ECU into thinking it's running right? Like, is there some resistors or something we can plop in there?

Someone on here has done it.. Search, cause i don't remember who. Maybe someone else remembers?

Anyway, it is possible, but you have to jumper some leads on the ECU to trick it..

Go ahead! Change the colors of it though (maybe just invert it?) so we are still a little diff.

Running the stock ECU / wiring harness with a manual transmission is possible. It's pretty tricky though and you do you have to some splicing of wires as someone said to make it work. Stock ECU is not worth your trouble though - too much hassle and too much stress to make it work well, plus then you can't do many good engine modifications because it's holding you back. If you use the stock ECU, it will be the weakest link of your engine.

Yes. As far as I know, the available EMS units which claim to run split timing on a 3-rotor for emissions are the Electromotive TEC3, Haltech E11, Microtech LTX-12, and Motec M800. Just about any EMS which will run a 6-cylinder engine will run a 20B with no split like the Mazda-sponsored road race cars. My own opinion is that it is better to have the split-timing option and not need it, rather than not have it and wish you had it later.

Search for posts by Now. He is the only person on the forum who bothered with the stock ECU.

the 929 and the jc cosmo trannies are similar, the jc has extra clutchs packs and heavier duty parts, but they are otherwise very similar

I searched "Now"'s posts, and came up with the following conclusion....

get something OTHER than the stock ECU to control the 20B.... his **** looked hard as hell.

Welll... it looks like I'm gonna hafta try to bump up my loan amount now, so I can afford the be-all, end-all..... the MOTEC.

I don't think it's a good idea to get a personal loan for the $20,000 or so that it is going to cost you for this project. I think it would be a better idea to just build it slowly, starting with a working car, then adding the EMS, and then the engine, as your paycheck dictates.

How many projects you got going now? There is the 4 rotor FB, 13b-rew SA widebody and now a 20b 929... You sure you can do all this? That sounds like $50,000 worth of projects and a full time job just working on all the projects. Better get the 55gal drum of gojo.

Resurrected from the dead!

As you are all aware, I've had a number of different projects here and there, and unfortunately, I STILL haven't gotten around to the 9 20B 9 yet. I'm checking out a few nice 929's in 2-3 weeks, and after that, then I'll look for the 20B.

I haven't forgotten about it y'all!
