First rotary, rx7 20b

Hi Guys,

This is a my first rotary ive owned.. Its just been built - almost a 12 month project. I live in Australia, and this was built by promaz. Its a 20b large extend port, GT42r with methanol injection. I now have the 'rotary bug'! I finally see what Rotary owners are so passionate about.. these engines are truely amazing.

Wow. A 20b as your 1st rotary car? I truly hope you know what you got there... 99% of the 13b owners only dream of owning such a car.

Is it a real Spirit-R that has been sacrificed? Type-B or Type-C?

sacrificed? I think you mean "enhanced" Its a type B spirit R i've been told. Yeh, i drove a friend's NA 13b many years ago when i was in university and was very impressed. It just took me many years to get myself one..
The only downfall is i haven't got enough room for the air conditioning condensor and my turning circle isn't quite what it used to be (understatement).

There's a good kit for the P/S A/C. https://www.rx7club.com/defined-autoworks-176/%2Anew%2A-c-p-s-20b-conversion-kit-fd-843118/

Nice FD though.

well, this is interesting. your first rotary is a 42R 20B Rx-7, eh? you're driving 90+% of the rotary world's wet dream. congrats!

i hope you treat it right. i do kind of feel sorry for you in the event that you get "used to" it and want to "upgrade" though. i mean what do you do? 47R? 55R? 26B? what?

enjoy it, man.

Thanks for that link.. although all my compressor etc is hooked up - its just that i have no location for the condensor. It looks as if i'll need to have a custom one made up and fit somewhere, as i chose to have the biggest intercooler i could fit in its place.. the custom will will need to be smaller to fit it anywhere im assuming.. which will make it less effective - but better than nothing.
Do you guys have the same issues as i do with your turning circle? Besides this, the car is amazing to drive. The power just keeps coming, until it breaks traction at the top of 3rd gear.. love it.

wow 20b fd as your first 7? awesome!

Where is your intercooler located? is it a front mount? if so i placed my condenser in between of the radiator and the front mount intercooler along with a 10" fan to help the condenser stay cool. works very well here in sunny Florida. Hope that helps and Congrats on the beautiful ride.

Unfortunately, I have no room between the radiator and intercooler.. i had the biggest PWR items customized that i could fit in there... it seemed a good compromise at the time! here are some more pics

What did you do to correct the steering rack geometry with the different engine subframe? I'm assuming the engine is lower a bit right? Might be what you refer to as your "turning circle" issue.

Welcome and good luck with the car.

Thanks for the comments..
Yeh, it needs wider tires.. although i'm trying to make it look at stock as possible externally, including a stock 3" exhaust tip! Suprisingly the tires do ok.. it almost hooks up in 3rd until it hits about 6000rpm and 15psi, then its a little scarey at about 60mph/100km/h.. the first two gears i don't push it.
I've taken the photo at my friends workshop Sumo Performance in Melbourne Australia.. they have a number of Japanese cars inc that skyline.
As for cost, the conversion wasn't cheap.. similar to what you guys are paying there in the USA given conversion rates of our $ etc.

some more details:
20b series d engine
TSR apex seals
Extend ported and exhaust alloy sleevs in rotor housing
Rotating assembly balanced
Exedy twin plate clutch
Cusco LSD locker
Billet rear drive shafts
Microtech LX12
1000cc injectors/twin in-tank pumps
PWR intercooler and radiator
Turbosmart 50mm wastegate
Turbosmart BOV - plumbed back in
GT42R 1.15 exhaust
Methanol injection system - comes in at 10 psi
eboost 2. programmed for street (7 psi - no meth) and race (and street!) 15psi with meth

is this going to be non-functional, or is the turbo really going to go through a 3" exhaust? I mean, for the looks, its perfect for a sleeper, but i wouldn't recommend actually making the exhaust bottle down that much.. having a free flowing exhaust is free power, and will give you quicker spool. It makes a very big difference on a rotary engine specifically due to the sensitivity that these engines have to backpressure and their high exhaust volume. (not sure if you knew this due to this being your first rotary)

the car is still a beast though! good luck with your project!

Thanks mate, my first requirement was that it wasn't to be offensively loud.. which it isn't. Promaz know what they are doing, and according to them, it flows well for this type of power. its a twin 3" off the dump that comes into the final muffler at the end.. the tip may be 3.5" .. i may be wrong with that.
The dyno'ed it aT 450RWKW (600hp) on a dyno dynamics dyno (conservative) at 15psi. Aussies dyno's are often understated in gereral compared to USA dynos, so the numbers don't mean that much.. The way it accelerates does though! my other ride is a 99T with the 650HP vivid racing kit on it (turbos,cooolers,tune,19psi etc), and it is comparable to the rx7 on 7psi... 15psi is a whole different story..
