custom intercooler core

hey guys, i looked all over the internet, and nobody sells an intercooler core with the dimensions i need. i'm using the stock cosmo end tanks, so it needs to be 4"deep, 12"high, and 14"across. every site has either 3.5" or 4.5" thick cores, and the only 4x12 i found was 24inches long.

where has everyone else gone to get the best deals on their custom intercoolers? thanks

I got a good deal from Spearco on my custom intercooler. Spearco can make a 4" core, even though it is not listed in their standard sizes. I would imagine that other custom intercooler manufacturers could do the same. Custom dimensions are not always advertised.

BTW, why do you need a 4" core?

i want a 4inch core because that is the thickness of the end tanks of the intercooler that came with the cosmo. . .just to have something a little different. it's kind of looking like i'll just get a complete intercooler though.

how did you get in touch with spearco, i've been trying to find out how to get a hold of them, and everywhere i look, it seems like they only go through other people. how can i get in touch with them directly to place the custom order. thanks again everyone

making fun of my abuse of ellipses eh?

the 20b fc in my signature is my current project. all of my questions are helping me build that car. the motor is in, tranny and driveline are hooked up, radiator and e-fan are ordered, and i'm ordering the haltech e11v2 with flying lead kit this weekend. it's coming together real soon.

as for the intercooler, i'm trying to figure out what i'm gonna do for the intercooler. i want to use the end tanks from the cosmo intercooler that came with my front clip because they have substantially less pressure drop in them than typical end tanks where everything is at right angles for top and back feed intercoolers. however, for the trouble, it's looking like i might just go ahead and give up that ghost and buy a complete intercooler.

anyway, thanks again for everyone's help.

No, sorry, that wasn't my intent.

I was trying to insert some dramatics into the thread.

Most of us just try to fit the biggest core we can afford to stuff in the front.
Of couse endtank design is important - see Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost".

Your approach is a bit unorthodox, so I was a bit confused on what exactly you were trying to do...

It depends on how you are planning your project, but in my case there was no way to fit a large intercooler in the car unless I routed the pipes out the sides of each end tank. While it is really great to design a maximum-efficiency / minimum pressure drop system, the most important consideration is that it needs to fit in the car.

Given the work (and labor costs) of cutting the end tanks and welding them on another core, you may as well just order an entire custom assembly and be done with it. Also, you would need to find a special high-flow (low efficiency) 4" core if you wanted to run the car on the street. I guess another option is to simply use the stock Cosmo intercooler assembly since you have it already.

I don't think Spearco sells to the public now that they are owned by Turbonetics. Any Spearco dealer should be able to give you a quote if you let them know the specs.

You can also check with other brands or custom dealers.

maximum boost is a great book, had it on the shelf for years. that is what prompted me to try and stick with the stock end tanks. he reccomends keeping as much stock intact as possible because generally it has the most R&D money into it and has the best flow patterns for the application.

like evil reccomended, i've pretty much resigned to just buying a complete intercooler with end tanks from somewhere, most likely bell intercoolers at this point. either way, thanks for all the input.
