Red face Another one of those "Can I build a 20b" threads, but I'm serious.

I’m honestly contemplating this swap, on a budget while doing all the work myself. Why, because I want to be different.

My car is already running a T04R Kit, built, pinned, high dollar 13B. I’m hoping that I can re coupe most of my money for a Basic Do-It-Yourself 20B conversion. I know that shops charge 30-50-100k for the swap but I’m hoping to throw a basic 20b together for under 7-10k.

My plan is to use a stock unopened 20b with the stock twins, just to get myself a solid base to work with down the road.

Here is what I have, let me know what I can and cannot use. What’s remaining is what I’ll sell.

3mm, Pinned, Balanced, Ceramic Coated Rotors, Large Street Ported Motor.
Deep Alum Oil Pan
T04R Turbo Kit
ACT 6 Puck Clutch
9 LB Flywheel w/ counter weight
3rd gen tranny
Fluidyne Radiator
Be Cool Radiator Fans
Wolf 3D ECU
KG Rail and 1600 Injectors
-6 line to and from the Pumps
Aeromotive Fuel Pressure Regulator
Dual intank Walbro’s
Blitz Front Mount Intercooler Kit
MSD 6AL
MSD Blaster Coils
HKS BOV
Greddy Elbow
Profec B
Greddy Pulley Kit
Misc

Well it is going to be 1 month when the clutch show it. I am looking to get the car started this weekend. The only thing I need is the intercooler piping. I know you can make it happen hammer if you need that motor built let me know? But first let see how my rebuilt holds up on the dyno

I would recommend the defined autoworks 20b subframe kit -- will save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Thanks, I had planned on buying a mounting kit. I wouldn't want to re-engineer something that's already been perfected.

Is the Defined Autoworks the only good subframe available?

How about my other questions?

Right on, will do.

I'm not in that big of a rush. I won't be able to start parting mine out until July 25th.

I just need to figure out which existing parts I can use so I know what to sell.

I would just sell the turbo kit, injector rail, ecu, and motor. Usually most of the stuff can be reused.

Can the ACT Clutch, 9lb Flywheel and counter weight be used?

How about the Radiator?

Don't need the 13b counter weight, but flywheel, clutch, and radiator will work.

I use the 20B counterweight instead.

RX-Specialties make a subframe and so does RX7 Store(suspect there are a few others). What sold me on the Defined kit/setup is no movement of the steering rack (read no bump steer, or need for correction kits) and it uses the stock subframe which brings me to my last point -- I plan on auto-x'ing mine and the rules get a bit sticky about modifications to and or aftermarket subframes.

Balance the whole rotating assembly, I think its a bit pointless balancing just the rotors themselves.

I am unfamiliar with any cars using ceramic coated rotors...

Hinson makes subframe for 20B w/bump steer kit for around $1k

My plan is to buy a motor with good compression so I don't have to open the motor. Down the road, I would most certainly balance the rotating assembly.

I just looked that up. $1,250, has me interested. What are the reviews on the Hinson Subframe?

I'm not worried about keeping the stock subframe intact.

Should be able to reuse all of this, if you want.

About the Wolf 3D, will it work as is or will I need to send it off to be setup for a 20b?

The Rx-Specialities unit is the best, imho, of the more traditional units out there. They have a bump steer kit and I have never experienced any issues with their unit.

The Wolf 3d won't handle your EMS needs. Many of us use the Microtech LT12 and I think everyone is fairly happy with this EMS.

Gordon
Gordon, why do you say that the Wolf won't handle my needs? Evil Aviators sticky indicates that the Wolf 3D 4.0 will handle the 20B. That's the ECU I have, the Wolf 3D 4.0.

Does it just need to be modded for a 20B or is it a bad ECU?

Thanks for your input!

^ I think Gordon means as far as technical support. Your not gonna get much set-up help from us on that ecu as I don't know of anyone running that on a 20b. I think David Hayes tried at one point over his 6yr thread in the 3rd gen section. Now if your very familiar with your Wolf, then by all means you should be fine. Also don't hesitate to ask the Wolf experts in the Wolf Ems section. I too considered that ecu a while back but got a great deal on my Haltech E11v2.

Sell the wolf and get a microtech lt12 or lt16. I can give you my map when I get it tuned.
