20b is in (sorta)

Ive got a TII

I took the sway bar down and the engine is now sitting on the steering rack. The only thing is the hood still doesn't close.

It seems like I might have to lower my steering rack but I don't want to do that if it isn't necessary.

I appears that everything is making contact wit the hood when I try to close it.
In particular the throttle body intake tube hits, that secondary coolant diaphragm thing hits and the alternator bracket hits.

The hood closes to the point where it just catches the first latch.

Any ideas?

Mine had the same problem even with the engine mounted only 1/8' above the steering rack. Gutting the inside of the TII hood solved the issue.

See Chito's hood here:

Yeah, I saw his sight but I ignored it because he has a custom intake manifold.

Was yours a TII hood?

I must be missing something. What is custom about the intake manifold other than the polishing?

If you mean the elbow, yes, it will hit the hood. You need to either modify the stock elbow or make a custom elbow.

Chito's email is listed as rx720b@aol.com but I'm not sure if it still works. Maybe you could look him up on an internet people search?

It looks like a Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development speedway bar (part # 000-04-7301). If you are not a member, here is a picture of the AWR version:

i had the same deal with mine, the 20b intake fits nicely in the t2 hood scoop. about 1/10 people notice the motor in there and do a double take...

that speedway style of sway bar is really simple to setup

somehow i doubt chito's email still works, those pics are OOOOOOLD

Thanks guys, that sway bar looks like the best bet to do this right.

I cut the hood, then painted it. The hood closes nicely now and you can hardly tell that it was modified.

Hey man,

Take the bonnet to a panel beater and have them cut away the strut that's in the centre and fouling on the intake. Won't compromise strength. Alternatively you can modify the scoop on the bonet to sit over the high point of the intake. I'm doing the same on mine currently =)

I'am going to get my swaybar shortly and I just realized I had forgot to ask which was preferred between the AWR unit and the Mazdaspeed.

Also I heard REted makes one, anyone run one of those?

Well, the Mazdaspeed bar is marketed for the 3Gen RX-7, while the AWR bar is marketed for the 2Gen RX-7. I would imagine that you would need to mount them in a custom location in order to clear the 20B oil pan, so maybe the body style doesn't make much difference, but I am not sure. I was planning on using the AWR bar myself, but I have not ordered one yet to check fitment. Unfortunately, since every 20B conversion is unique, just because something fits on Chito's car or my car it doesn't necessarily mean that it will fit on your car. On the good side, with enough money or machinery you can make anything fit, lol.

About a year ago I asked REted about the sway bar, and he said his source no longer makes them. I think he tried to get another production run, but I have not heard anything since.

if it doesn't mount up in the stock location, it seems like I could do just as well with moving the stock sway bar or relocating an aftermarket stock type bar. If you do order the AWR piece, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on fitment and performance.

The AWR 2nd gen "speedway style" sway bar mounts on top of the frame rails and in front of the engine. You need to cut holes in the fenderwell for the bar to come through. It is a very nice piece.
