You're Making Me Dizzy

A'ight, I KNOW someone is going to scream "Search!" BUT it's been unreliable as of late.

My buddy Matt, local Rotorhead member, has a fantastic li'l SA he was lucky enough to pick up for $900 CDN (about the cost of a cab ride in LA). Today he was asking me for a complete list of what he'll need to swap out the points for a newer ignition system. He's got the new coils, dizzy, and "a chunk of wiring harness".

Can one of you who've swapped ignition systems impart your wisdom to him on this topic?

Sorry to bring this back up from being "buried", but I had to respond.

I had bought a mix CD of oldies that I got because it had a song my Mom used to sing to me at bed time, and I was going to use the song as a part of a present for her. Kinda sentamental (sp?). Anyway, Tommy Roe's "Dizzy" was on there, and it was just kinda catchy and I happened to remember the lyrics. I still have that CD too, lol.

Well, thanks for going to town for me Manntis. This thread did go remarkably OT quick though. If RotorMotorDriver hadn't ressurected it, I never would have seen it either.

You shouldn't need the "chunk of wiring harness" at all,
you do need to eliminate the ballast resistors from the circuit, though. The easiest way I've found to rewire the system involves finding a wire from the ignition relay that gets 12V when the key is "on" AND in "start" position. (Had a problem with a REPU one time, seems the coils weren't getting 12V when the key was in "start" position) Anyway, run that wire to the + terminal of one coil and make a jumper to the + terminal of the second coil. There are 4 wires that come from the distributor, two are for the 12V that power the ignitors, and the other two are for triggering the coils.
You can tie the two 12V lines together and connect them to the + terminal of one of the coils for simplicity. The triggers then just need to be attached to their respective (leading and trailing) coils with spade lugs.
That's pretty much it. Good luck! -WG

Well yesterday I was calling it some nasty words because it wouldn't stay running after initial startup in the morning, but I don't think the particular terms I was using were appropriate . My first car was a '80 Pontiac Phoenix, which sported a gold paint job, thus I called it the Golden Chotch Mobile... I think something more reverential is in order for my SA22C.

Suggestions anyone?

BTW his car, though Canuckified, used to be a Texan rocket... somehow (IMHO) the name should reflect that.

I did that swap a few months back on my cousins 'racecar'. Pretty staight forward. You might consider going to that DLIDFIS. I've been meaning to convery my 84gsl for awhile now, but since you got most the parts already, it'd be worthwhile, I think.

Here's a nice how-to for putting an 81-85 electronic distributor in his 79 Rx-7. Hope it helps.
