Question Yet another driveshaft question. But its quick

I got a different driveshaft(used from the yard). The front ujoint, that goes into the tranny. Is it suppose to move all four ways(like up and down, and left and right)?

I hope you guys understand what im talking about. The one I got from the yard move all 4 ways, and mine only moves two.

The purpose of the u-joint (universal joint) is to allow the drive shaft to move in all directions (4) without binding.

If you are not getting free movement, you have a bad u-joint.

Are you saying the slip yoke had some play in all directions, or are you talking about the U-joint itself? If its the slip yoke (the part that goes into the tranny), then thats not good. If its the u-joint, then thats right. If your old drive shaft only moved in two directions on the u-joint, it was deffinately bad. That would actually make such a vibration that it would probably vibrate things apart inside the car, if the car moved at all.

Ok, just making sure I understood what you were asking. Yes, the u-joint should move up and down and left to right. Thats what gives it its full range of motion when turning at any angle, as mentioned before.
