Unhappy Won't start cold

Twenty seven years later I purchase a beautiful Silver 1985 Rx7 to find this model is still carbureted...who knew.

She starts beautifully when warm. Takes 10 minutes to get her going cold!
Replaced the choke cable to full working condition.

Can't find a fast idle adjustment, or other setting to help with problem.
The choke reseller mentions something about a manual 2,000 RPM setting...

I'm sure someone has an idea. It's averaging around 40 degrees here in OR.

Thanks, Rich

"Manual 2000 rpm setting" ? Don't know about that. When the choke **** stays out, you're supposed to set it to ~2k rpm when warming it up that's all I know.

do you need to pump the pedal to get it started or does it not start at all?

Mine does with a pump or two, but I have to keep the choke out manually much longer than in warm weather or it'll turn off.

Thank You All

OK! I'm getting the idea about the cold start. I'll try and develop my own technique. I assume the 2,000 RPM just means adjusting the cable when its running.....

Thanks, Troops

I dunno about you, but this is how my choke works. . .

There's almost like two settings on it, if you pull out the choke all the way, it'll rev way up past 2k, and then if you push it back in about half way, you'll feel it stop like there's a notch to keep it there, the revs will come back down to about 2k.

To start my car when it's cold, and I had to futz around until I figured out what was just right for my car, before doing anything I pull the choke out all the way, then step on the gas pedal a couple times, then start it, and she'll usually start right up. She'll rev up past 3k, and then I push the choke in to that half-way point. If your choke assembly is working properly, it should stay there until the car is warm, and then pull itself back in.

I hope this helps!

Absolutely have to have the choke all the way out to start. Pull the top off the air filter housing to see if the choke flap is all the way closed when the choke **** is all the way out.

Here in Michigan have to use full choke to get it going and then immediately push it in until the revs drop below 1500ish.

Yeah, you have to develop a bit of your own magic with these old systems. lol.

On mine (back when I had a choke), I would give her 3 or 4 pumps and pull the choke out about 3/4 and start her up. Once running, push the choke **** back in until she's running about right to warm up.

You'll need to get the feel for your own car. How many times to pump the gas, how far out the choke needs to be, etc.
