well, i was taking my friend home today and when i was waiting in her driveway for her to get out, my car just randomly lost idle and died. i tried to start it back up and nothing. let it sit for awhile, then tried starting again, nothing, so i kept trying, eventually i got a couple pop's, i stopped, tried some more and she fired up, but not willingly. i held the choke in so she would idle at about 3k, otherwise she would die. got her home, and messed around looking for leaks or anything out of the ordinary... nothing. so i went to advance and got new plugs. fired right up, idles smoother than before. so i cut her off. i cleaned up all my tools, and decided to go take her around the block and everything was fine. when i pulled into my driveway it started doing it again. i thought maybe since there was some carbon on the plugs, but not a whole lot, i should see what will happen when i take it through the rpm's. so i took it out onto a main road, and took it up to 5500. she stumbled at first, then roared all the way up. she was holding some idle then, but eventually she would just die. it wasnt fast dieing either, she runs.. then goes down to 500 rpm's, shakes really bad, then slowly just stops running. when i was changing the plugs, i got my step mom to crank her over, three consistant pulses. i changed the coils out as well from a parts car that i had. no luck. she has fairly new dizzy cap, wires, and rotors, along with the plugs i just changed and coils. i have to go to work, but when i get home, im going to try and change the fuel filter. any other suggestions? i hope my motor isnt going my dad has a compression tester, im going to try that tomorrow if i dont have any luck with the fuel filter.

i got home from work to find my dad took the liberty to mess around with it and actually fixed it. i thought that was pretty badass because i wasnt really looking forward to ******* around with it in the dark, right after work. anyways.. he said the carb was pouring gas down into the engine. floats stuck maybe? i dont know much about carbs to tell the truth. anyways, im glad i have an extra car because he pulled the carb off of it and put it on my car and he said it ran perfectly, which it does. no more "caming" sound, i didnt have to choke it on start up. perfect 800rpm idle. im not going to get on it for awhile since the carb hasnt been run in over a year.

Glad its fixed. Sticking floats are common with a 7 thats been sitting. I usually tap the top of the carb with a mallet right on the banjo bolt heads. That usually frees them up.

whoa whoa whoa, i might need to do this carl! mine keeps flooding out! ahhhh, i dont want to rebuild, what is the "banjo fitting" your talking about hitting! hhaha i need to slam mine!

What exactly causes the floats to stick? Is it dirt? Would a carb cleaner or a few tanks of gas with MMO help un-stick them? I never had that problem so I'm curious.

The banjo bolts are where the fuel lines go into the top of the carb. It happens to be right above the needle valves.

Bob, I think its from old gas mostly. My racecar has this as a chronic problem cause it sits so much.

Old gas left in the carb will eventually go "bad" and develop a varnish that sticks to pretty much everything that the gas touches. Sometimes, the varnish turns to a tacky glue-like substance that can cause the floats to stick or catch dirt that could clog a jet or two eventually. If the car is going to sit for a while, the best way to prevent varnish buildup is to mix fuel stabilizer with the gas. Later.

I might also add that there are also two little screen filters in the fuel inlets that wrap around the banjo bolts. They sometimes get plugged up in one spot, where the fuel flows through them. I usually just hose 'em out with a little carb cleaner before re-installing them to be safe.
