wiring harness swap question
I am swapping the entire harness that is botched up in my car with another good one. Is the interior and exterior harness one continuous one, or does it disconnect under the electrical tape somewhere near the flexible rubber boot on the firewall?
I find it hard to believe that MAZDA did not put plugs to separate it at regular intervals, but its looking like one huge wire mess at the moment.
I have a 79 rx7

well in my 85, there was only one connector that seperated any harness. That connector was in the engine bay, on the passenger side, right by the firewall.
Thats the onyl one I know if. The FC wiring on the other hand, is seperated at regular intervals.

ouch.. ok, thanks for the info, very much appreciated.
Pulling that harness through the firewall into the car is going to be a pita.
Plus, i need to remove the dash on the parts car still and do the same thing to it..
Yech..
On a side note, whats some good stuff to use to remove the smell of a mouse?

actually, once you disconnect the connector I discribed above, there isnt much to pull through the firewall.
Part of the reason why the wiring is not seperated is becausem, the FC's were all fuel injected. That requires quite a bit of wiring.
But most first gens came with a carb. The only wires you have comming from the passenger side are probably for emissions purposes only

well youve got a 79 all your engine related plugs should be on one harness coming out of the driverside. if my memory serves me right it goes back up into the dash and all the other stuff. it can be replace but its alot of work. the 84 i had had 2 wiring harnesses, dash realtaed gauges and engine temps, then a ecu type one for emmsions and the disssy..

yeah the 84 and 85 did technically have two seprate harnenesses, but there are wires intervieving inbetween thw two that makes it impossible to seperate with out taking apart the whol harness.
I tried to pull my ecu wiring for my swap for theres about ten wiries that should be on their own strand... the harnesses would be completely seprate. If mazda had simpily attached these to a connector like they did on the FC's this would be much easier.

Nope, nothing coming out the passenger side firewall.
Also, the part of the harness that separates at the firewall is only for the carb electrical stuff, oil sensors, and water sensor. Everything else, ignition, headlights, parking lights, radiator sensors, distributor, etc, is all tied into one large wiring bundle and does not separate at all.
