wiper motor

anyone know if there is a retrofit wiper motor from another car that is closer to todays speeds for a 84 rxl gsl. my motor works just slow compared to todays wipers, also would like to change the arms to the hook style...read the post about cutting the arm from a mazda 626 but any other arms that fit the wiper arm stud comming through the cowl?

The hard part of the wiper is the knurled end connection. The easiest way I can think of is to remove the very end piece by drilling out the rivet and re-rivet, or weld, the hook portion from another model. I'd think if using rivets that you want two about an inch apart.

I'm not sure about the wiper motor and another make that might fit. The issue could be that all the power for the motor goes through the stalk. To test the speed of the motor itself, you can run a ground and 12V power from the battery to ensure it's not the motor itself. In my part of farming country, we have shops that can rebuild electric motors.

its pretty common that the wiper rack is not great, its worth pulling it apart and cleaning and lubing it.

that being said the fastest thing on a new car is the wiper, and the Rx7 will just never match those speeds, it wasn't a thing in 1985

Hello Kansas, I have a question you might be able to answer. The wipers on my 1985 GSLSE are working proportionally across the wipe section, no problem, but upon turn off, they do not retract the blades down to a lowered position. Is that what the extra wire on the motor is for? How do i get this to retract on turn off?

The first gen doesn't have a park position like modern wipers. When they stop, that is parked. The way I've dealt with this is to take the wiper arm off the stub and reposition. It's a fine line between sitting on the trim and glass.

I would like to chime back in here for some education about the wiper servicing. First, I have a new assembly, the entire wiper arm inner assembly, i bought new and as parts are getting so hard to find and my goal is getting the car to like new internals. I had a wiper problem and took it to the mechanic, we took the center vent panel off and discovered that the assembly inside had an active arm that had slipped out of socket and we simply replaced it as we saw no damage and it was an apparently effective fix. I wanted to go ahead and replace everything at the time with my new assy. but we could not see a way, with just the center panel out to replace the assy. as the other hole is on the outer body panel and seems inaccessible. Can you provide instructions for replacing the entire swing arm assy.? What is the extra wire for on the wiper motor? Why, if you have the blades adjusted at rest to sit near the lower windshield trim, do the blades not travel over the whole area of window? Its a rather limited travel on my GSLSE. Would hook arms help the travel issue? I have mine adjusted to cover the most window area, but on shutoff they sit 4,5" above the trim. They can be lowered and will stay low once nudged, but that looseness of travel there is puzzling as well. In general the wiper is slow but steady and pretty effective in light rain. Help is always appreciated guys, but my car is running great and is such a joy to drive! Cheers

to all you other GSLSE owners!

The whole wiper assembly (arm and motor) can be removed from the car at the same time. I did this a couple of weeks ago to clean the area inside. Are you saying you cannot remove it?

No, we could not see how to do it. There did not seem to be clearance to get the one side that does not go through the center panel out. Can you give me a simplified procedure?
Thanks, John
